| What do you know about this painting then? |
Picasso's "Massacre in Korea," his depiction of U.S. soldiers killing of civilians during the Korean War. Didn't get the fanfare "Guernica" did, but still considered a strong political statement. Considering it took the Koreans themselves till the 1990's to confront the attack, the painting really is groundbreaking stuff. |

art has almost become inaccessible to the common man.. art pushes the boundaries of previous art and as such it is often difficult to understand unless one has the benefit of a course in art history or if one studies art privately and incessantly....
that saddens me a little because art should be for the betterment of humans, but post-post modernism and almost everything since modernism (depends on the category; painting, poetry, stories, music) has become difficult for the "average joe" to access (meaning and relevence)... |
I disagree. Art can be likened to science/mathematics, as I think both are the pinnacle of human creation. We dont lament that mathematics is not accessible to the average Joe, so too I believe we shouldnt lament that art may not be accessible. Though I do think you are understimating the average Joe. Also, I think you are also understimating the average Joe's culpability here: art can be accessible to anyone who wants to make an effort to "get it". Watching NHL hockey on TV 4 times a week isnt going to help. Should art then limit itself just to acomodate a bunch of people who dont give a rat's ass? |

that's why i said "saddens me a little" i think the expression means i accept that art must push forward... computers and such, while understandable, are not necessary for survival though, they just make life more interesting and comfortable.
art makes people want to live... it reflects the human condition... and, it also makes people kill themselves... science is understandable, and predictable.... universal laws and all that crap... art exists in an ethereal realm of imaginary constructs. |

Science is understandable to those who make an effort. Ask an averege Joe about bosons or quarks, ask an average Jane to do some advanced mathematics. If you make the effort to understand art or science or mathematics you will get it. I dont see the difference. Art has never rally been something for mass consumption, not good art anyway. Think of music. Music consumed by the masses is generally garbage. Aiming to please the masses drags art down, when it should soar. |
