What the hell is going on with my country? I find this trend truly disgusting, perhaps because noone in my family has a weight issue. I personally just don't get why someone would eat more than they need to. "You are FAT, so stop putting FOOD in your MOUTH!". Seems like common sense to me.

In IGTG fashion, I must ask if there is a conspiracy at work. BBW porn sites? The plus-size garment industry? What could it be?

Rant over.

"Don't worry about your kids getting fatter just because McDonald's is trying to move them from the Quarter Pounder to a new "Third Pounder". It won't work. They're American kids! They don't know a third is bigger than a quarter."

This PowerPoint shows the percentage of people who are obese on a state by state basis over the last 10 or so years.

http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/trend/maps/obesity_trends_2005.ppt

It is from the U.S. Center for Disease Control, about as reputable as it gets.

But here is a map from the last slide. The key shows the percent of people who are obese.

M,

Interesting graphic. The Southern stages are pretty bad (except for Florida). Anyone want to speculate why?

If I had to guess why the southern states were more prone to obeisity, I'd put my money on the economic situation before the food. I mean, I'm from Kansas, famous for BBQ (which isn't exactly the healthiest thing on the planet) and fried chicken and according to the graphic it's one of the better states. Low income families tend to be more prone to obeisity than middle and upper income families because of the lack of education on the matter as well as the tendency to buy more inexpensive food items that typically contain more fat and calories. I mean, when was the last time you saw twelve people living out of a trailer sitting around grilling garden burgers and eatting hummus?

Who cares? This is a non-issue. Being fat is a choice.

The land of PLENTY. Comes with the territory.

but it still is an issue -- why do American's have a very potent mythology and archetypal narrative of always having to fulfill all their desires to the extreme?

Maybe because they can, maybe it is something else. I'm not sure but I know this is part of the American Dream, as much as truth and a sprawling green lawn anyway.

Obesity is an ugly symptom of a first world that swallows something like 30X its share of the worlds resources, not to mention has caused global warming while escaping its effects.

If you're an overweight american who argues over the size of the fries with your double cheese whopper and you meet a thin, starving person from Sudan, what do you talk about?

Big surprise the percentages aren't much higher. I've been to locations as divergent as NYC, Las Vegas and Philadelphia (and elsewhere in PA) and freakishly fat phucks are ten-a-penny. Some can barely walk....or barely waddle.

No surprise to see nice blue states (although there are exceptions of course) like CT, MA, OR, WA with lower rates. Nice Democrats tend to keep themselves in shape by seeing the inside of a gym and eating actual food.
