Anyone catch worldnews Asia yesterday and the bit about the rise in popularity of a cartoon in Japan that is apparently quite anti-Korean? One line I rememeber is the artist saying something like "I hate the Korean-wave. We are responsible for the growth of Korea in the last 50 years" (I'm not gonna argue with him, just shocked that he actually said it)

Has there been much about this in the Korean media? Is it a big thing or just a wee little blip on the radar? Anyone heard anything?

It's a big thing, but isn't it old news?

This is the book:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga_Kenkanryu

My favourite part: "The Japanese characters in the book are drawn with big eyes, blond hair and Caucasian features (supposedly implying superiority); the Koreans are drawn with black hair, narrow eyes and very Asian features."

Substitute "I hate the Korean wave" with "I hate disco". Koreans are going to have to get used to every wave has a backlash. When you sell your product as a whole culture, the lash is going to strike there. A few months back some music producer was trying to separate his k-singer from the whole Korean wave, understanding the future. Naturally he was called a traitor to Korea. He well understood, however, the fate of disco. If that goes down, no Korean act is going to get booked outside of Korean shores for two decades.

Just a minor correction, but quite a few underground bands have gained a bit of a following outside Korea. The Geeks have done two tours in the US and one in South Asia, and Crying Nut played a festival in England last year. Then of course there are numerous Japan tours and a few things in China.
