After the national humiliation that was the Dr. Hwang Woo-suk debacle, you'd think that no Korean would ever even think about fabricating data again. Guess not.
Controversial S. Korean paper on wolf cloning removed from science magazine's Web site

An international science journal on Wednesday deleted a paper on wolf cloning by South Korean researchers from its Web site amid scrutiny of the paper over alleged data fabrication.
In the paper published in the March edition of Cloning and Stem Cells, a team of researchers at Seoul National University led by Lee Byeong-chun and Shin Nam-sik said it cloned two female wolves, named Snuwolf and Snuwolffy, in October 2005 for the first time in the world.

I just won't believe it until it's completely proven they fabricated data. Who in the hell could be stupid enough to do that again? It would take some pretty colossal stupidity. Let's see... |

SNU begins probe on world's first cloned wolves
Quote: |
South Korea's top university said Monday it has begun an investigation into suspicions that one of its research teams released erroneous statistics last month when it announced that it had cloned wolves for the first time in the world.
The team, led by Lee Byeong-chun and Shin Nam-sik, veterinary professors at Seoul National University (SNU), said it cloned two female wolves, named Snuwolf and Snuwolffy, in October 2005.
Lee was a key member of the team led by disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk, which produced the world's first cloned dog, Snuppy, in early 2005.
"Our Research Integrity Committee embarked on an investigation into the team's study on wolf cloning," Kuk Young, chief of the university's Office of Research Affairs, told reporters.
The school will take proper punishment measures if the suspicions are found to be true, he said.
Some biologists suspect the team manipulated statistics to inflate the success rate of its wolf cloning technology. They claimed the team might have intentionally mentioned a lower success rate in dog cloning to make its wolf cloning look more successful.
Others raised suspicions that Lee falsely arranged the numbers in a table for analyzing the mitochondrial DNA sequence of the cloned wolves and their surrogate mother dogs.
Lee admitted to the errors in his paper and vowed to ask the international science journal Cloning and Stem Cells, which published his paper in its March issue, to correct them. However, he denied allegations of making deliberate manipulations.
Hwang and Lee were put on trial following the discovery that their research papers on human stem cells contained fabricated data. Their work in dog cloning, however, was confirmed to be genuine and successful.
The university said, however, it did not shut down Lee's research room since sera samples from the blood of cloned wolves and dogs used in the cloning have been already secured.
"We apologize for failing to make a perfect system (to verify the integrity of papers written by SNU professors)," Kuk said. The university will make efforts to improve the verification system with help from scholars in each field of study, he added. |

Maybe it's suspicious because the lead researchers insisted on pronouncing it 'oolf' |

Maybe that's what they were counting on. People thinking, "Nah, they couldn't be dumb enough to try fabricating data twice." |

The guy's reputation is shot to hell. Good lesson for any scientist thonking of lying. EVEN if the wolves were cloned, I dont think the paper should be published. |

Of course, keep in mind that this research was probably well underway when Hwangate busted wide open. By that time, perhaps they had no other option but to cross their fingers and move forward with the cooked books. |

Notice how these things get exposed once the research is given over to international publications? Anyone think this correlates well with the post a couple days ago about no Korean schools being on that "100 best universities" list?
The question now is, "When will Korea wise up and start straightening out their universities?" How many times do Korean researchers need to be humiliated on the public stage before these universities start enforcing more rigorous standards of education/oversight?
Isn't Korea so fixated on saving face? Is this not the EXACT opposite of saving face? |

Crowly Ho! Stop the presses! Did mr enlightenment himself just make a race-based joke?
Or was it just another lame attempt at sarcasm to show how great you are and how lame we all are for pointing out humorous differences in people? |

I'm not sure it's race-based or sarcastic. I think he was just trying to work in the fact that the word "wolf" sounds funny when pronounced with a Korean accent. It does, doesn't it? |

Extremely funny... but usually when others make such comments (i.e laughing at others/mocking others for being different) our local funny man gets all excited. |

Yep. 'Nother hurdle tripped over in the race to be in the top 100.
That said, this problem exists in the West as well. More scientific fraud is being attempted now because there is so much pressure on academics everywhere to publish in Citation Index journals (the higghest rated journals in each field based on a number of criteria), as that is a primary measure of their own productivity and professorial productivity is defined in this way is a primary measure of university quality. Jobs and promotions ride on this. The publish or perish atmosphere often joked about in academia has become reality. The pressure is especially strong in non-English speaking countries because the Citation Indices are inherently biased towards publications in English. You not only have to have research that can grab pages in the right places, but you have to have the language to make that clear as well. This is why, as I mentioned in another thread, editing work for academic publication is a growth field for people with specialized English knowledge right now. |
