Good God! Talk about censorship.

I'm not trying to bring back or start a "I hate Korea thread". I'm interested in this countries history. The good and the bad.

Quote:
Starting in 1938, Koreans were both forced and recruited into the Japanese military and the first "Korean Voluntary" Unit was formed. Among notable Korean personnel in the Imperial Army was Hong Sa-ik, a lieutenant general who was later hanged for war crimes.

As foreigners in South Korea we often hear on the news of Japanese atrocities during the war. The refusal to this day by the current administration in Japan to accept responsibility for the thousands of sex slaves bothers me a lot.

But what I wasn't aware of is the fact that Koreans themselves were involved in the abduction of these sex slaves. I'm not putting blame on the Koreans for actions of the Japanese military.

I'm just curious as to how events like these occured and wonder how united the Korean people were under Japanese occupation? Was Japanese occupation the lesser of two evils when compared to Joseon rule?

These are interesting topics and questions. I am appauled that some here are attempting to silence history. Remember we're south of the 38th everybody!

And if necessary I will start another thread about Japanese atrocities, or Polish and French collaberators, in order to balance the subject. But please don't delete a thread because some may find it offensive. I'm just posing some questions about a country which I want to learn more about and now call my home.

I guess a lot of this goes to the idea of Korean nationalism.

An interesting term, when almost 60 years ago this pennensula was rife with civil war.

Yes Korea is a nation, however, there appears to be a lot more behind it. It's almost a phoney nationalism during times of defeat and weakness.

How's your Korean? I have a book that you might be interested in reading that as far as I know has only been translated into Korean - it's about 200 pages of tapes recorded in the 60s by some of the higher up Japanese people that used to run the place during the occupation. Since it's just the tapes as is, it's pretty much just reading conversations between university students and the guests they brought in so it's probably doable for someone at the upper intermediate level.

The footnotes are as difficult as any other dry text but most of the book is only conversation like the above (just a completely random paragraph from the book).

Thanks for the suggestions Mirth, but my Koreans still not there yet. (I really need to take several months off so I can concentrate on studying).

But in regards to your post, do you know of any other good books (translated into English) that could answer some of my questions or at least increase my understanding on the history during the Japanese occupation.

Korealand is a fascinating place. I'd like to understand it and it's people a little better.

Subject: Thread question
Hello Endo,

The thread in question was cleaned up and has been reposted in the Off Topic forum.

It had become riddled with insults and flaming. Lets hope it remains on topic this time.
