I think the title of this thread should have been, "Cover songs that are better than the original..." as, personally, I think the majority of original recordings are better than covers. It's very difficult to convey sincerity with a cover version. |

I keep hearing re-makes of "What a Wonderful World".
Get a grip artist people! Louis owns you all. Don't even try. No one has been able to get even close. But yet the re-makes continue.

Reggae and ska musicians generally cover each other and it's sometimes pretty hard to figure out who does the original. I'll only go with the obvious one for now.
Dandy Livingstone does "A Message to You Rudy" much better than the Specials. |

I like The Clash's 'Police and Thieves' but think the original version is better. Well that's assuming that Junior Murvin's version is the original...? |

Yeah, Junior Murvin/Lee Perry is the original. The Clash actually cover a lot of songs that people don't know. In most cases I have to say their covers are pretty much equal to the original, despite being radically different.
Once I heard a Korean rock band announce "We're going to do a Clash song now called 'I Fought the Law.'" I shouted at them "No you're not!"
Recently I discovered the originals of "Revolution Rock" by Danny Ray and "Police on My Back" by the Equals. |
