I have been having problems with my supervisor. She has told me on numerous occasions that I cannot control my students, but I cannot dicipline them. She routinly comes into my classes and into the teahcer's room to tell me how I am failing at my job, especially with the kindy classes. She also has told me that I need to lose weight (I weigh 120 lbs and am 5foot 7), and that I need to 'improve my English'(I have a master's degree and am a native speaker). Today was the last straw. I enquired if I could recieve some books for a class, but was told that 'I didn't follow the sylabus (I did). I was verbally harassed and told "I have told you this before. Why are you so slow?" The male native teachers are always told how great they are and how everyone loves them because they let their kids play in the Gym, but I have gotten in trouble for playing Hangman for the last five minutes of class on a Friday afternoon.
I guess I am writing this because I am pissed as fuc*******ing he****.
I need advice on whether I should stay in Korea (I don't want this to happen again) or to move to a new shore. Thank you.

Hi,

Yeah don't hesitate but if they tell you they have cancelled your visa, it might be true and you have to be ready with a ticket for Japan and a new job. My school had my passport though. I hope you are not in a similarly poor position.

Be prepared...my initial hagwon owner was a first class **** who didn't speak any english either. I refused to go home although she thought she could boss me to go home.

Get someones recommendation and check out the school..I never looked back.

Good Luck,

Michelle

So, basically she is treating you like a piece of crap and she thinks the sun shines out of the male native teacher's arses.

Girl, you so don't have to put up with that for a minute longer. If you were in your home country would you let a supervisor speak to you like that. Come to think of that, if they did you could probably report them to HR for bullying.

You are an intelligent person don't waste another minute there where you are not appreciated.

How far are you into your contract?

Well, after writing all of that down, I looked at it and realized that I don't need this anymore. I printed out my resignation letter and turned it in.
Now, I will have to talk to the evil boss lady who will try to screw me out of my last months worth of wages, I'm sure. Freeedoooommm. I just have three more classes to teach today and then I'm having a beer.

I can't believe she had the balls to tell you that you need to lose weight. That's probably the worst thing you can say to someone.

How long were you at this job? Will you have to pay anything back?

Be sure to work with guys next time, they'll treat you better.

K-women can be quite competitive and bit*hy to other women they feel threatened by.

Same goes for guys. I always get on great with K-women but theres virtually always friction when I have to work with K-males.

Best thing about teaching in Korea is that the school staff is predominantly female.

Why are you afraid of her.....seems like it.....I'd be right back in her face big time! Tell her to mind her own friggin' business and tell her that her English speaking skills suck.
No one can use you or step on you unless you let them.
She will back down once you stand up for yourself....she's just jealous and trying to impress someone.

I have a little less than six months left on my contract, so I won't have to pay anything back. I lose out on my "Deposit". It makes me a little disappointed that this is how I had to leave. I like the kids in my classes and my co-workers for the most part. I work long hours (7-8hrs of teaching a day), so I guess I should be glad that I finally had the balls to leave.
I never thought that she was jealous, I always thought that she was just ignorant and racist. Oh, well.
I haven't decided yet wheather to stay in Korea or not. I haven't really liked it so much thus far, but my job might be dimming my opinon of the place.

Really? They always treated me like crap her and treated the guys so much better. I have been told that they prefer to hire guys to teach English and that female teachers are inferior. I have also been told that I am a bad teacher because I am an American and that hogwons prefer European males. Or, at least, this Hogwon prefers European males. Maybe this is bizaroo hogwon?
