why doesnt the NHL have shoot outs in the playoffs too?

these two teams must be very tired. they have played more than 2 games as far as time goes and it's not over yet

Ya I'm listening to the game radio. Love to be watching it live.

Any of you guys figure a good site to download torrents of the games yet?? I can't get anything.
I'm hoping torrentspy or mininova will have them up soon...

just teasing ya

the "canadian" thing is cuz most hardcore fans hate ending games in shootouts and when they're as important as playoff games are, no one wants to see it end that way. which of course I'm sure you realized, being a canadian hockey fan and all.

actaully i was comparing it to soccer this year because the world cup has shoot outs too but for some reason the NHL didnt care that the fans didnt like shoot outs in the regular season, but when the playoffs come, they all of a sudden care.

unh... because the regular season is, like, regular and all, and the playoffs are, like do or die, eh?

The shootout in the regular season is, in my opinon, a good thing. There's no need to play 4, 5, 6, or 7 periods of hockey when there's only a point or two on the line. Have you ever watched the fans during a shootout? At least 80% of the crowd is on its feet and cheering. Positive response? Check. Nail-biting excitement? Check. And, everyone gets to go home at a decent hour. What's the problem?

In the playoffs, though, when every game is critical to a team's survival, well... the shootout might wrap things up a bit quicker, but it just wouldn't match the intensity of sudden-death overtime. Who's got more guts? Who's got more heart? Let - MAKE - the players play the game until someone scores.

4 overtime periods. THAT'S hockey!

It seems you're implying they kept playing until someone won before the shootout was introduced, not the case, it was just a 5 minute overtime and if there was still no score then it ended in a tie. They introduced the shootout so teams wouldn't end in a tie, therefore leaving fans frustrated, cause who the heck wants to watch a tie, this isn't soccer. As someone else mentioned playoff hockey is a whole different story and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Perhaps listening on the radio was boring for you, but actually watching it is pretty exciting.
Try www.sopcast.com as it's pretty good for streamed games.

The only way to settle a tie game in playoff hockey is overtime. It's fantastic to watch as players are giving their all and the game can be decided on any rush.

To win the Stanley Cup is the hardest slog in any sport. Players are playing their hearts out to win those sweet 16 games. The intensity level is unbelievable and players are playing hurt.

A shootout is okay for regular season, but no way should it ever be contemplated for Stanley Cup playoffs!

As for World Cup soccer. Deciding the World Champion by a shootout is a cop out. I've had endless disagreements with Europeans over it. They can't seem to be able to fanthom the idea of playing till someone scores, no matter how long that may occur. Their usual comment is players get tired. I mention hockey and how players play a whole game and then may play another whole game or more until a team scores.

Not to say that hockey isn't grueling, but in soccer substitutions are limited. Hockey has line changes giving the players at least some time to rest. It's a different situation.

It's great to win those LONG games, but they wear the team out. Remember that Flyers/Pens game a few years ago that went into 6 OT's? Philly was whipped, and that cost them vs NJ, in the next round.

It is a different situation indeed. In soccer, players are wearing... what? Shorts, t-shirts, shin pads, and a cup. In hockey, players are covered head to fingertip to toe in protective gear that just doesn't breath. And when they're on their shift, they skate hard. Hockey players get HOT on that ice.

Not to say that soccer isn't gruelling in its own right either, but trust me, 1 minute of ice time leaves a player plenty winded. I've got tons of respect for soccer players and their physical conditioning, being able to stay on the pitch for 90+ minutes, but they tend to spend a lot more time walking / trotting rather than going full-bore end-to-end.

Funky's got it right. The argument of "...the players get tired" is weak. The Stanley Cup is a champion's trophy.
