The End is Nigh for XP

Quote:
"Computer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite strong ongoing demand for the OS. Analysts and computer makers are wondering if the move is premature given Vista's ongoing performance and compatibility issues. Dell recently said it would reintroduce XP on a range of machines due to customer demand but Microsoft will only allow this until the end of the year."

I got Vista for free, but I have no wish to install it. I'm not ready to say goodbye to downloading/playing pirated tv shows/movies/music.

I guess I should go out and buy a few copies of XP before the year is out so I can make sure I get it on my next machine. It's just ridiculous that they're killing it so quickly.

I wouldn't bother. The next time you need to buy a legal copy of XP, just get one from eBay. No need in funding the Microsoft war machine years before you actually need to.

OEM...who cares. The cost of a computer that will run Vista with all bells and whistles is getting really low, so I can understand their reasoning. Once they stop selling it retail though....

Personally, I am only concerned with how long MS will support XP with updates, etc.

Dual core, 2GB of RAM, 256MB graphics card...pretty much mainstream now.

MS stopped supporting Windows 98 in 2006. That's about 8 years of product life. XP won't be available for sale, certainly, but I would guess there's another half decade of support life in the ol' girl.

(Hard to believe but XP was first released in 2001.)

I'll probably switch to Ubuntu before I use Vista. I'll wait for the next windows o/s before I make a final decision.

No man...just wait. Vista will be bludgeoned into submission. There are already some programs out there designed to strip it down and there will be a lot more soon enough. If MS tries to force our hand past the DX10 scam, there will be a vicious backlash by the underground community.

Patience.

Vista will give up the ghost...we'll be downloading most excellent copies in due time.

One of the things that really kick started Linux was Windows 95. This was back in the day when the 386 was the workhorse system. No way in hell people were going to be running Windows 95 on that. So it meant basically going out and buying a whole new system. Of course there was an old system sitting there. So lots of your computer users decided "oh what the hell, I'll throw Linux on my 386 and see what it's all about." Many were surprised to find their 386 ran quicker on Linux than their new 486DX66 on Windows 95.

It may well be a repeat. People deciding to buy a whole new system to run Vista and deciding to use their old XP system to run Linux.

I will agree. Either there will be some new hacks and tweeks, or sales will be so dissapointing compared to its predecessors that it will kill some of those protections. I think it will also boost record sales of pirated Windows XP for that purpose.

I'm not sure if you're refering to this, but vista has been cracked... a few times over now actually. I had a dual-boot with vista ultimate a week ago but felt it wasn't really needed so deleted it. It ran fine though, and I was able to activate it and everything. Look for the Paradox version of Vista Ultimate.

Cracking the update/validation scheme is no big deal...there are a host of other aspects to Vista that are far more troubling and it is these that will soon be broken apart. This is when I will be interested in Vista.

I buy my computer for me, not the RIAA nor MPAA. As well, I like things to be removed from my computer when I say so, and not during an update. Therefore, Vista can go blow a donkey.
