I would read her other posts thougb I fear my IQ would dip about 20 points.
Jinju, don't worry, from what I've heard it's impossible to have a negative IQ. We certainly don't want you to risk getting dumber then you already are. |

'tis sad. Wherever they may wander, their troubling convict origins inevitably rise to the surface. |

Exactly! Nothing can be otherwise than it is. No one can do otherwise than she in fact does. The poor boy from South Jeolla was bound to scam the five-thousand dollars from the begining of time (if there were one).
This is why imprisonment is so tragic.
And this is why a hanging is not ultimately different from a lynching. A man is lynched because of something beyond his control (his skin color), a man is hanged because of something beyond his control (his fate).
The criminal justice system is tragic because there is no better system widely in use for preventing crimes; despite the moral flaw about it that agency is a legal fiction. |

| Only Jinju can turn comments that meant nothing into a battle of words. Good job! |

Come on Ralph, let's try not to misinterpret people's intentions:

Another thing is that the guy might've just gotten a year or two and probably wouldn't have finished his sentence. I have no doubt that he'd go and steal again after getting out of prison.
Korea has so many damn rounds of amnesty to make politicians look good. |

Interesting use of the words "civic duty." Perhaps your aunt sees it as her civic duty not to send a poor boy from South Jeolla to prison because of her own carelessness. To elaborate a bit, you write, "...in no way laying blame on the ... victim," but why not? It is the habit of Westerners to excuse victims, when rather often it is the victim, who, through their own negligence, allowed the crime to happen.

I have to disagree with this mentality.
If it's not yours, don't take it.
Allowing a crime to happen? It only happens if someone decides to do it. Just because I don't lock up my bike for the 5 minutes if run inside to get something doesn't mean I'm asking someone to take it. It's the guy's fault for taking it and HE should be punished. While my common sense tells me to lock it up, my sense of right and wrong tells me it's not MY FAULT if someone steals it.
That said, I still lock up my bike because I'm not an idoit and I recognize that not everyone thinks like me. |
