I've had a cold recently so I've been coughing out all sorts of phlegm. Leaving my office tonight, out on a quiet back street near Yangjae, I executed a bicycle blow (finger on right nostril, blow out other nostril, then switch). One of my nostrils misfired leaving a tendril of mucus hanging from the tip of my nose. I yanked it free, tossed it to the pavement, took a deep breath and muttered "Hell yeah."

Then I looked left and saw a Korean man staring at me in total disgust. Whatever, man. It's only water mixed with antiseptic enzymes and a little bit of immunoglobulins. And it's not like you're going to be licking the street anyway; people step on there. Wh don't Koreans just learn to fucking loosen up?

I can only do that with relatively globulated boogers. True mucus lands on the upper lip.

I salute you (except in this case of a misfire).

I feel ya. I was blasting snot rockets using the same technique in the bushes by the subway entrance a few weeks ago when I was sick. Some middle aged Korean man gave me the stink eye, then proceeded to hock a HUGE loogie right in the middle of the stairs (not off to the side, right in the middle) on the way down to the subway. At least I was considerate enough to expel the mucus where someone wouldn't step in it...

The funny thing is that spitting and hocking up phlegm are routine in Korea. Just looking on the ground or subway stairs shows a good deal of the stuff. Just walking down the road you're apt to hear a few throats being cleared and stuff being expelled. Did it have anything to do with not being a Korean? Maybe you didn't do it the full justice your average ajosshi would Question Wink

And here I was thinking that I was the only person who still did that. We call it a bushie's blow, or bushman's handkerchief in Aus. We should form a support group or hobby club, get together over beers and show off our respective techniques.

The Golden Rule:

When in Korea, do NOT do as the Koreans do!

Don't excrete body fluids on the streets. That's a right solely reserved for Koreans.
Don't drive aggressively and park anywhere you feel like it. Only Koreans are allowed to do that.
Don't drink too much and become overly emotional, noisy, rude or violent. Koreans are given special allowances for this because they have "Han".
Don't make too much noise in your apartment or have a lively house party. You will most definitely be annoying your neighbors who are engaged in their own noisy house party or beating their wives and kids. They are allowed to do this because they suffer from "han".
Do not engage in promiscuous sexual activities, go to hookers, date around, two-time/three-time, etc. Koreans are allowed to do this as much as they want as long as they don't talk about it and pretend as if it doesn't happen.

The list could go on forever!

You got it right there.

All eyes are on the foreigner, everything he does becomes amplified X100 and conclusions are drawn about all foreigners from his example.

and.... BLOW YOUR NOSE next time with TISSUE PAPER. Hoking or shooting out one nostril is DISGUSTING. I don't care who does it.!!

You're a typical arrogant, ignorant, foreign fool. Only ajummas are allowed to "farmer blow" on the streets. Wink

Where I come from its called a 'snot rocket'.

And I'm a very strong advocate. Theres no greater sense of achievement than totally clearing out the sinuses with one strong blow and leaving no trace of mucus on your face. Very Happy

You should have walked up to the Korean guy and sniffed his hair on the way past.

I've done it but not in public, not when anyone could possibly have seen, because it IS disgusting. Yeah, Korean men have their own disgusting behaviour, but who the hell uses them as a benchmark for personal hygiene & etiquette?

I think Koreans are often great prudes, but this isn't a good example of that.
