i see the thread on pension. - can't i get my pension put into my korean bank account? i have no canadian one anymore...
but someone else mentioned possible taxes being sent back too? if so how?
also my visa is up before my bosses want to let me finish work (a couple of weeks) can i extend my visa or change it into a travel visa or something. and if so, how?
what's the normal amount of time for last paycheck and bonus to be deposited (as i assume i should close my korean bank account).
and does anyone know about bringing dogs into canada. i have a maltese from here, he's vaccinated and i have his (in korean) rabies certificate and certificate of health. actually, i don't even know how to buy him a ticket for the plane...let alone how to get these documents translated into english for customs in canada.
thanks so much. this is the most helpful and sweet site for the confused and mentally incapable such as myself in korea. (i can't understand why they do half the things they do here...) |

For pension I think you have to go to the pension office and show them an airline ticket home. You can't collect it until you leave Korea....to my understanding.
To extend the visa you must visit Immigration. It would help if your boss came along or some native Korean speaker.
Last paycheck and bonus should ALWAYS be paid on the last day of work. Don't accept being paid late for ANY reason...if you do that you have a 99% chance of never seeing that money. (you work at a hakwon right?)
I don't know about the dog question. Sorry.
And as for not understanding half the things they do here...you've just described 90% of the English teaching population here. |

| About your dog, once you have your airline ticket, or if you have it already, call the airlines to make arrangements. You'll have to pay extra and, I'm not sure because of the long flight, but usually they put animals in the cargo hold. You should go to a vet before the flight and get some tranquilizers so he'll be more comfortable. I don't know where you'd check for Canada, but in the US they keep animals in quarantine for a certain period. The airline might know where you can find out. Good luck and congrats on finishing your year! |

For your dog question, I have a dog, and have done this.
DO NOT TRANQUILIZE HIM. Do NOT put food in his travel cage. Do NOT put water in his travel cage. Walk him before you go. When you get to Incheon, you will have to go to animal quaranteen. It is one floor above checkin. Do this before you check in. You will get a paper from them. They will check that he is alive. You MUST have a paper from your vet stating that he has had a rabbies shot in the past year. Your dog will travel in cargo. Once in Canada, if Vancouver is your first stop, right after you pick up your luggage, on the right hand side of the path you will walk down, is where you will pick up your dog. On the left hand side is oversized luggage. They will have your furry friend, open the cage, check to see if he is alive. Charge you a fee, I think it was $25, but I could be wrong.
Once you get him, give him a big hug, and tell him he did a good job. Make sure he has his favorite blanket in the cage. Go walk him, he will have to take a wicked pi$$.
If you are landing in Toronto first, I am not sure where, you pick him up, but all other rules apply.
After you get your plane ticket, call your carrier, and book a space for your pooch. You will need the dimensions of the cage, and the weight with snoopy inside.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Good luck. |

You should check out the website on service dogs..I am in between classes or would supply the link. But a service dog is defined by any service you say he provides, even emotional support. By law the airlines are not allowed to ask what your disability is and you should be able to bringa dog the size of a maltese in a carry-on bag.
google service dog guidelines, defining your dog as a service animal saves a lot of red tape and quarantine issues. |

What do you do with your dog when you have it as carry on?
Can you get it out on the plane to play with it? What if other people are allergic to them? Does it go in the overhead locker? What about the x-ray machine. Does the dog go through the xray machine or not? |

| Airlines used to allow small dogs, (yorkshires size) on planes, they travelled under your seat. But because of the problems you mentioned, allergies, little guy barking and crying and such, I am almost 99% sure that they have changed this rule, and now, all dogs must travel in cargo. Again, I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading this on a airlines website. |

excellent advice. thank you so much. makes me feel a little less stressed about my dog. you know i was getting really worried that it would be the hardest thing ever, as just getting my own lame butt out of korea seems like a lot of red tape. anyways thanks.
what about taxes? possible to get taxes back? someone mentioned it to me. or anything else i should know about leaving korea. phew. it's been a long two years, i'm actually quite excited about LEAVING..... thanks again for all the advice. |

K,
Ok, as always, there are differing opinions on everything...mine are different regarding canine travel on planes.
Remember, Google is our friend: http://doglaw.hugpug.com/doglaw_042.html
Tranquilizing your pet is fine as long as your vet agrees. Each pet is different and some can take the drugs...both of our vets (Korean and US) agreed it wa ok to tranquilize our pooch. As for food, well, we were required by the airline (we'd do it anyhow) to supply food and water for our girl and they'd feed/hydrate her whilst in transit (20+ hours in transit). There are other requirements such as these...just check your airline's site to see what they want.
As for a ticket...just tell your airline you are bringing your pet (they'll want dimensions of your cage). Your vet can order you one that is best (hardshell, ample slots for air flow, 'locking' cage door, water and food holders <our water holder resembles a gerbil/mouse water nipple...and it took time to train her to use it>). The picture below shows what our kinda looks like...with the food tray attached on the grate (no water nipple, though)
Your vet will also know what documents you will need and have them done up for you easily. The documents, I believe, are in English.
Again, visit: http://doglaw.hugpug.com/doglaw_042.html
Happy travels!
!shoosh,
Ryst
PS: look into diaper sheets just in case she urinates...much more comfortable/clean for her |
