So the girlfriend and I are thinking of heading to Moscow when we finish our contract...I'm scouring the net to find out how to get a Russian visa, but everything I read is slightly different. I've been told that I probably have to travel to the Russian embassy in Seoul (I live in Daegu) which will not be possible on a weekday. Has anyone on here ever obtained a Russian tourist visa? If so, what did you need? i.e., travel itinerary, sponsorship, etc. Can you mail away for the visa?
Hopefully someone knows and can save me a trip to Seoul.

See a travel agent. They can take care of your visa.

I have gotten a Russian business visa, so the document requirements were different. However, iirc, it is possible to apply for the visa by mail. I would be pretty wary of doing so however. As you might expect, the Russians are real sticklers for making sure the paperwork is absolutely perfect (my first attempt got rejected due to the faxed invitation not being a crystal-clear copy).

If there is a good side, it is that supposedly the meanest people get assigned to the embassy in the US, so hopefully the ones here will be a little more reasonable (yeah right). Anyway, Russia is a wonderful country to go to. I suggest taking a trip to St. Petersburg while you're there. (I liked it more than Moscow)

Have fun!

Thanks again. St. Petersburg is definitely in the plans. Did you take the train from Moscow? Seems like the easiest way from what I've been reading.

not to be an a**, but the reason you post travel questions in the travel forum is because those people who make up the 10% of the traffic there in comparison to this forum are the people who likely know something about travel and can answer your question.

I was actually in St. Petersburg taking the train to Moscow, but yes, overnight train is definitely the best bet on that route.

Getting a Russian visa is not always a drama. Getting my Russian visa was by far the easiest and most pleasant visa experience I have had (but I got mine in Australia). The staff were friendly, relaxed, and didn't even query a section I had no choice but to leave blank in my application form.

On my second trip to the embassy the man asked me to check things for him!
