Same type of screw, different depth.

I care. I think some people have some distorted notion that only foreigners get the shaft and Korean people have a free pass because of their appearance.

When Hagwons go down, I can guarantee that a lot of the Korean Teachers get the shaft too.

Less pay, less vacation time (if at all), fewer sick days (if any) more work; count your blessings, they are taking it deeper in the a$$ from the big boss man.

When I had my hearing with the labor board last month. One of the k-Teacher was also taking the the owner to the labor board for not getting paid her final salary.

Well, it depends, but we are more likely to get shafted, because we don't have the legal protection, and they are more likely to take the word of a Korean over a foreigner. In my last job, my ex-boss did pay the Korean workers, but she wanted to sell me to a recruiter and had no shame in trying to do, though it was illegal. She could do it to me, because the owners own our visas. The government in the end knew her place was bankrupt, she was morally bankrupt, so they sided with me, because her behave was bankrupt, and I had evidence. They got paid with no problem. I had to fight for mine. However, it can definitely happen where Koreans don't get paid and my impression is they are less likely to fight back. It is no secret that in some cases some bosses even hit their employees. They wouldn't dare do that to a foreigner, though, because they are more likely to hit back and do damage.

I concur. Where I once taught, in addition to everything VirginIslander just described, the KTs were also required to get on their knees and scrub the stinkin' pit from top to bottom every semester---for free.

At hakwons...all the time. I guess they walk into the screwing with their eyes open.

They are paid way less for way more hours. They have to lie to moms and dads saying "Yes Min suk is a wonderful student".
They have to clean and the boss usually controls their breaks and vacations(if they get any).

My wife didn't even get a vacation when we got married(it is the law).
The boss said if she complained he'd fire her.

Yeah, they get cheated, too. Most Korean teachers won't stand up for their legal rights. Rolling Eyes

One month the pay was late for a bunch of teachers, but I was the only one upset about it. One of the Korean teachers gave me some long "blah, blah, blah" about how my "yin-yang" had "too much fire" coming out of it. How did she know anything about my "yin-yang"? Was she stalking me? Rolling Eyes

The Korean teachers were more worried about their "yin-yang's" than getting paid on time. Rolling Eyes

How many times have people come on this site saying that they haven't been paid that month, and the Korean teachers haven't been paid for several months. I don't know why Koreans keep working for months without getting paid... Still, they get shafted in the hagwon industry too. I think they get less in the public school and university scenes though (atleast for illegal things, not overtime and hoeshiks)>

The first year i met my girlfriend we planned a holiday to Australia but her boss said if she went he would fire her..

I told her to call his bluff and quit, which she did.

Boy did his tune change quickly as he then said, how long do you want for your vacation....she quit anyway for being an asshole and got a much better job with better conditions.

I would have told your wife to quit.....

Koreans have the option to quit and find a new job the next day.
I have had K friends who stick it out and just get shafted and shafted with more hours and less pay and treated like shit. The ones that are happy are the ones who quit, walked away, found a new job for more pay and less hours. Many hagwon workers are newbies anyway and are needless scared to quit. But unlike us they have the freedom to work for anyone and have a family home to support them.

I do have sympathy for them but if they aren't doing anything about their situation then that sympathy fades quickly. And working months on end without getting paid! That's not naive it's just plain dumb.

No doubt they also get shafted - probably more so on general, though this often stems from spinelessness.
