I bought an Australian travel magazine the other day. It has a full page 'Korea Sparkling' ad.
Over the top of pictures of young Koreans break dancing and of World Cup supporters at City Hall is the writing:
The Korean B-boys took the world by storm.
Korea's jubilant Red Devil soccer fans captured the imagination of millions.
Korea's IT industry is trend-setting across the globe.
And in between there is a frenzy of energy that never ceases to sparkle.
This energy is Korea, ready and waiting to charge you up.
Come and experience Korea, Sparkling!!
(My scanner is broken.)
Without a doubt the worst tourism campaign in the history of tourism. |

Korea, Sparkling. Not only does it sound like weird, crappy English, or the name of a drink... it just sounds wrong, doesn't it? Maybe that's why it should be Korea's official phrase! How many things are just "wrong" here? Many! Therefore, isn't the slogan perfect?? |

Exactly what I mentioned earlier... why do they think people care about other teams' success? You don't see New York running ads with pictures of the Yankees hoisting World Series trophies. |

I too gagged when I first saw it. And the graphics look so.... cheap. Kind of like the label on a no-named bargain-brand window cleaner you're forced to buy when the convenience store is out of Windex.
Oh, here's another thing it reminds me of:

The beast is growing!
Check out the goofball video on Korea's tourism website.
http://english.tour2korea.com/index.asp
Complete with B boys, an old yangban guy on the KTX watching (what else?) soccer on his cell phone, and of course his Imperial Sparklingness Rain, with glitter eminating from his fingertips just before he mutters "Korea, Sparkuling!"
God help these people.
He put them on a peninsula for a reason.
But it gets worse!
Click on the "participate" text and then "sparkling event #2" to write your thoughts on the video and win a trip to Korea! It's all under the guise of "Be a copywriter and win a trip."
http://english.tour2korea.com/Event/20070409/eng/src/event1_main.asp?dep=1
The comments are worth the cash. I truly believe that most of the comments were not written by contest applicants, but rather the staff at the KTO. The grammar and spelling mistakes are all too obvious. These comments were not written by people who want to win a trip to Korea (a whole other issue) but rather by Koreans who are already here.
I see the same mistakes every day in the essays I grade.
Read them, laugh and see for yourself. The only entry possibly written by a native English speaker is the first one, an obvious plant by the designers of the site.
Very dynamic clip. It starts with a very peaceful setting, like our traditional view of Korea. And then, bang! The clip shows us that Korea is very modern and dynamic, turned to the future.
For one who likes the thrills of modern city life, the clip is very tempting. For one who's still see Korea as a traditional place, the clip is a lot surprising.
Believe....Believe.....Sparkling......Believe......all is sparkling........go to the light........the sparkling light........cross over children.......all are welcome.........all are welcome in the sparkling light...........
From the Dr. Hwang school of advertising, here are some more choice cuts.
After watching this ad , it made me have the desire to travel to Korea again since everything in this ad was very sparkling.
I like that video i think the video shows that koreas is curious country, but as i know from many sources korea is beautiful country not mysterious. actually i never gone to Koreas.
from the video i can see that the old man who sail the canoe. and also wears old korean dress , because of it i really want to visit korea to travel the history place
From low country to city town with technology, traditional to modern up to lay back and adventurous session. Clip shows ancient Korea and modern vibrant Korea. Sparkling is good reference to enthusiasm and freshness.
we can see that in the scene where an old man wearing the traditional cloths... he using the train as a transportation and in his hand he had this cool hand phone which he can watch a football match...
korean never forget to introduce their heritage in fasion world.this clip shows how prominent is the seasons in korea,Spring in korea brings flowers, winter icy korea brings the power of the brightness. So in one sentence I can say this clip shows how korea sparks with their enchanting abilities and colourfull life in the map of the world What you see and hear from this clip are imprints of one spectacular job the Korean government has done for Korea and her people, I salute you!
Sparkling is to shine, glisten, be brilliant or lively.
All these words describe Korea very well in the past and present.
There is an energy to the video clip, like the sparkle of a diamond. The diamond emits many colours of light like the culture of Korea. You have many unique and interesting aspects to life in Korea that emit these different colours.
Korea does Sparkle, shining for the world to come and see.
Yes,Yes...I've never been to Korea and alway wanted to visit there this make me want to visist even more. it's so exciting; the video i see show their's a lot of thing to do there how nice!.
Starting from its dazzling snow season which especially attracts viewers who have never experienced snow and makes them want to experience it.
Korea, Sparkling
Kindly welcome everyone,
Original spirit fullfillment,
Renaissance stimulus,
Elegant as a diamond,
Ambitious and sparkling Koreans.
Korea, a country where the western culture meets the traditional east.
Korea, a country of modern technolgy who embraces traditions.
Korea, an exciting clash of cultures that will keep her visitors in awe! |

Plucky is one they used to get called an awful lot once upon a time, spec. with regard to their then up-and-coming economic status as one of the "Four Little Dragons" or "Four Little Tigers" of East Asia. Them plucky Koreans. Used more for the people than for the country. And personally I will always prefer to regard them as "plucky". The word itself brings back an era of the Hyundai Pony II, the KIA Pride, Prince Valiant haircuts, horrendously ugly neckties, no foreign-brand fastfood or coffee shops to speak of, and the near-complete domination of the local PC market by Sambo Computer & Daewoo T'ongshin. |

These days, I like to think of them as "adorable well-dressed high-performing alcoholics." |

Good God, I think I've gone native!!
Unless by "adorable" you mean pink dress shirts & man-bags. |

And sparkly hair pins, and cutesy handphone accessories, yes. Embrace the cuteness.
And I like the ambiguity of "high-performing". Does it mean that they are high performers, or does it merely modify the term "alcoholic"?
For certainly, after a night out, they do far better at work than I could. A few extra coffees and cigarettes, and some soup at lunch, and you'd hardly have known that he slept under his desk. Near miraculous. |
