is this something i can have done by someone else, or something i have to do myself? i don't wanna destroy my computer, but my laptop is about 15 months old now, and i feel it could use a good cleaning in order to keep things running smooth. at the same time, i really don't trust myself with my own computer. any suggestions?

There is a special compressed air spray that is made for electronics. It comes with a thin little tube to attach on the nozzle. DO NOT use water or any other cleaner, unless just for damp-cloth surface cleaning of a keyboard (where you carefully rub to remove something on the keys).

There are many brands of compressed air. Here is what a can often looks like:

Hold the tip of the nozzle maybe 3 to 5 inches away from the keyboard cracks and spray, moving up and down the keyboard. That will remove the dust and stuff that's inside. You shouldn't have to do this all that often. Don't hover over one place very long.

Here is an article you should read too:

If you have to clean out the inside of your notebook, take it to a service center for your brand. Don't do it yourself. I consider myself slightly mechanically inclined, and have taken apart a few notebooks, but I ALWAYS end up with an extra screw or two, wondering where they heck it goes... and these were old useless notebooks that I didn't care about.
