It was not however a form of oppression by any stretch of the imagination and any one who thinks it was oppression needs to check out what the word really means.

Main Entry: oppression
Pronunciation: &-'pre-sh&n
Function: noun

1 a : unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power b : something that oppresses especially in being an unjust or excessive exercise of power
2 : a sense of being weighed down in body or mind : DEPRESSION |
OK, so it doesn't qualify as cruel, key word being OR, so it just needs to be an unjust exercise of authority or power. Yep, looks like oppression to me, racially based oppression. |

Actually Kiwi,
It would qualify more as mild discrimination or misplaced protectionism...
But oppression, hardly.
Then again one's oppression is anothers annoyance and vice-versa. |

ACTUALLY Homer, read the definition. Is it unjust? Yes. Is it a use of power? Yes. Is it anjust use of power? Yes. Is it oppression? Yes. That's going the the DICTIONARY definition. Maybe you have some other criteria in your head. I'm happy to go with Mirriam-Webster. |

Having read this thread I am with Kiwi on this one. I quick check in the Oxford dictionary confirmed Kiwi's stance. I think Homer is just one of those "bored little white guys" he referred to earlier on this thread. |

Maybe you should delve into the archives and check out some of my old arguments. Then again I won't credit you with such intelligence. Idiot. |

Here goes G-boy...ohhh what a clever retort that was...folks this is big time hockey..he nailed him while he was allready down and then called him a idiot..what will he think of next!
OK time to defuse this little flame war in the making.
Your other posts were at times independently minded. But, you do have a tendency to jump on someone in here but usually after he or she has been "checked" by someone else.
Now, calling into question my intelligence and calling me an idiot in the same post if whats called redundency or overkill. You see, by questioning my intelligence you let be known that you thought I was an idiot hence the nedd to state it at the end of your post was superfluous. |

Well that is the nature of these discussions. I have lost count of the amount of times that I have been 'ganged upon" when making arguments. I expect it. Are you suggesting that I am not allowed to join in the discussion once two people are engaged in a debate? I can't recall anything offensive in my first post. I just pointed out that I agreed with Kiwi boy. I wasn't sure of the precise answer myself so I checked the Oxford dictionary. If the dictionary had come down in favour of you then I would have made the same post in defence of your argument. After all me and Kiwi have been embroiled in strong debates ourselves so it wasn't about sycophancy. |
