I've noticed this. In class, you've just called a kid on the carpet for fkin' around. Doubled his homework. Yelled in his face. Made him cry like the lil Maple Story playing future 30something mama boy wussy he is.

Two hours later, school is out, the same kid is waving madly at you from the school bus, screaming your name like you're one or all of Super Junior.

I guess the fact these kids can't remember anything for more than 3 minutes works both ways.

The kid doesn't take your discipline personally. It's a consequence for his bad behavior, not because he is bad as a person.

It seems you don't see it this way.

Yep.
Punish the kid.
But act as if nothing happened later.
Every lesson is a new start. Any bad feeling gets left behind when the bell sounds as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone else find it embarrassing when the kids see you in public and scream out TEACHER TEACHER!

If they just said hello, jaj, it would be better.

Part of what mindmetoo said was its specific to kids you just punished.
I agree, and I dont think its only that they attribute the punishment to general discipline rather than taking it personally. Its more like in Korea they're learning to be little suck-ups, at times. Relationships are more important here, so they need to be preserved... ESPECIALLY with someone like a teacher. On the other hand, they're still kids and going through developmental stages all kids go through. So, after theyve 'damaged the relationship'-- all in the course of being a kid and making mistakes -- they quickly realize it needs to be rebuilt... this is the means by which grownup adult Koreans have come to seem so superficial.

The kid probably did that and then turned to his co-student on the bus and said, "What an arsehole."

I've got so sick and tired of my students' fucking hand mirrors that I've started taking them away for a week (my middle drawer's amassing quite a collection) if they're playing with them when they're supposed to be paying attention to something else. On Friday as I was heading to the shop to stock up on beer for a night with my friends I passed one of mine who held out both hands and said 'Hi teachah! Mirror? Teachah, next I study hard! Teachah, mirror please?!'

Yes, I walk around on Friday evening with my pockets full of everything I've confiscated in case I run into a hopeful student and feel like softy teacher. Then this morning I passed her in the school loby staring at herself in the big, wide mirror with her face three inches away. 'Oh, no mirror?' I asked teasingly. 'Teachah, I pretty girl?!' she replied beaming, pointing to her face. Rolling Eyes
