"Perhaps the earliest, although poorly documented, case is the 1982-83 saga of Alex and Joan from the CompuServe forums. Lindsy Van Gelder, a reporter for Ms. magazine, documented the incident in 1985 in an article for her publication. Alex (in real life a very shy 50-year-old male psychiatrist from New York) pretended to be a highly bombastic, anti-religious, post-car-accident, wheelchair-bound, mute woman named "Joan", "in order to better relate to his female patients". This went on for two years, and "Joan" had become a hugely detailed character, with an array of emotional relationships. These only began to fall apart after "Joan" coaxed an online friend of hers into an affair with Alex."
kinda like the british guys on here who pretend to be bubbleheaded canadian girls. or dudes who pretend they drive jaguars but are, for some strange reason, considering teaching in korea.
basically, a troll is a lot of creative energy wasted on being a douchebag on the internet. |

I believe the example above is a sock. A troll is someone who says mean things and tries to pick fights, especially by posting an opinion or attitude that isn't how they feel but is rather an attempt to provoke others to respond strongly.
A troll is when someone posts something like "Americans/Koreans/Canadians are the most stupid/racist/ugly/ignorant." A troll post doesn't really share any ideas or questions, it just tries to provoke.
Something like that -- but it isn't really an exact science. |

If you want a great contemporary example, look up "confuzed"'s posts. "You're all cowards hiding behind anonymity on the Internet. I'm not going to tell you who I am or where I'm from, but I'm not an anyonymous shiat-talker. Oh yes, I'm going to kill you but you aren't going to find me." |

in a way - but the classic "troll" is someone who gets people to take things hook, line, and sinker.
like one time the day after reagan died, i posted that i was glad he was dead. that's a straightup troll, because i know there's so many nibnobs on this board who think he was cool.
but socks are trolls as well in that they get people to believe in their character.
confuzed's character is hilarious. he's a fat guy from ohio who has never been in a fight and he gets yuks by playing with himself while threatening people.
scarsdale yank's character was also hilarious. he wanted people to believe the penetrators were the best band in the world and anyone who said otherwise was a loser.
buddy bradley's character was also hilarious because it's impossible for anyone to hate that much. it was over the top.
in the context of this board and others like it, "sock" seems to mean one of 3 things:
1. "i was banned for being a goof or disrupting the jung of this board"
2. "i'm not a douchebag, but i play one on the internet"
3. "i think it would be funny to pretend to be one subspecies of human trash (canadian female itaewon bar-star, korean man, angry emasculated kyopo with a chip on his shoulder, annoying republican fruit)"
the sock itself is a troll in that it stirs people up and makes them think about really boring shit when they could go out and be awesome somewhere. which is precisely what i'm going to do after i press "submit".
like i said before, creativity wasted. |

I agree, although Scarsdale Yank was a real person who was exactly the same offline.
Examples of socks:
Knee-High Socks
Miss Korea
Svetlana
Pimp of Korea
Examples of trolls:
Travelous Maximus
confuzed
Pimp of Korea
Note, you can be both.
Other terms: flame-bait, where you post something incendiary so other people will latch onto it. |

Isn't it odd how both TM (the most annoying troll in history) and PimpofKorea (who I kind of like) both had pictures of themselves at one point or another as their avatars? Why would you do that???
By the way, i kind of miss that idiot TM. Did he get banned? |

I think we successfully proved Pimp's avatar pic was not really him. He did a Google image search for wigger. TM is in another country so has nothing to worry about from any of us. I'm pretty sure he's out the door. |

Here we go again, Unterscheisse. Let me get this straight. There are guys (so plural) on Daves who pretend to be Canadian girls - is this what you think? What British guys are these? On what basis do you blame Britain for trolls? Where are all these threads and posters? |

is posting a picture of your hand for your avatar ok? i worry that someone may recognize me because i dont have an index finger.
POK's old avatar was definitely not him. But seriously, there are some posters here who use their own pics.... there was that guy forever young a while back and oreo victim... although he is partially disguised...
i will probably get flamed for saying this, but i dont think it's a good idea to use your child's photo for your avatar either... i dont want nutballs checking out my kids on the internet...
but my hand is safe methinks. |
