1. Grunting when talking on cell phones.

2. Chewing gum with their mouth open. "Smack, smack, smack!"

3. Central A/C (or lack thereof)

4. No garbage disposals.

5. Washing hair in bowls in a shower rather than just using the shower.

6. Some motels that have a 1 night stay limit.

7. Fan death (c'mon Korea, this is the 21st century.)

8. And finally this:

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2022406290

Korea fancies itself as a "modern" country, yet the attitudes are more representative of a third-world intelligence. Compare Korea with Japan.. Japan twenty years ago was far more advanced than Korea.. so allowing for the difference in war reconstruction progress.. it seems like Korea is still rather much living in the past, despite their attempts at modernization.

Someone educate me please.

Korea was almost totally destroyed about fifty years ago. Shortly before, their culture was banned for half a century. That leaves you with problems.

Eastern Europe, Germany, Japan..

They've suffered similar fates. Eastern Europe was under the Soviet gun until 1989 and suffered devastating losses in WWII.. Germany was a wasteland after WWII, and also had to deal with reunification stress in 1989. Japan was also heavily bombed and even nuked in the 1940s.. yet, comparing these countries in 1990 with Korea in 2007, one must ask.. why is Korea's collective intelligence so relatively stunted?

Theoretically, based on time elapsed, Korea should be at the same developmental level as Japan was in 1990.

And superstitions... fan death? Eating dog to increase sexual strenghth? It's like witchdoctor stuff.. The most connected country in the world (based on Internet penetration amongst households) yet farming is still done in a style reminecent of the 1940s?

I just don't understand. Perhaps I'm the ignorant one. I like Korea, but the continual contradictions are baffling.

PERFECT!!!

It's so easy to point out the goofy things in Korea because they are relatively new to us, and therefore easy to see. So many people who post on here can't step back and look at the ridiculousness of their own societies.

Also, a HUGE number of Americans believe in psychics. Can you imagine the reaction on Dave's if Koreans believed in them too?

70% (or more) of Koreans are Christian. Koreans DO believe in psychics.. there are little fortune-teller booths all over the place.

That still doesn't explain the excessive spitting in public and the toilet paper on tables (tacky) or the used toilet paper next to the toilet.

Wiki:Main article: Religion in South Korea
Just more than 40 percent of South Koreans profess religious affiliation. That affiliation is spread among a great variety of traditions, including Buddhism (34 percent), Christianity (21 percent), Confucianism (0.2 percent), and shamanism.

Maybe they're constipated

The sewerage system can't handle processing high levels of nutrients, hence the need to dispose of your your organic waste by other means. It's one of the disadvantages of living in a country with low taxes

5. Washing hair in bowls in a shower rather than just using the shower.

My wife does that and it drives me crazy. We've got a modern, Western-style bathroom and she still leaves water all over the floor. I guess it's just one of those "We've always done it this way" kind of things.

6. Some motels that have a 1 night stay limit.

They're love motels. You're supposed to get your end away for a couple of hours with your illicit lover, then vacate the premises and give them the chance to change the sheets ready for the next couple.

7. Fan death (c'mon Korea, this is the 21st century.)

Damn straight. Perhaps it was a ploy by The Man to get the punters to conserve electricity when Korea was a poor country. Being basically a collective-minded people, everybody has since blindly believed this with no question.

8. And finally this:

Better in the pot than yapping their arses off in my neighbourhood. Let's all have some consideration for our fellow citizens, shall we?
