"Marriages of Koreans to foreigners are increasingly ending in divorce.
According to the Supreme Court, 6,187 Koreans divorced their foreign spouses last year, accounting for 4.9 percent of that year's 125,937 divorces. In past years the figures for divorce in international marriages were: 4,208 in 2006, 3,315 in 2004, and 2,784 in 2003."

Okay, so the NUMBER of divorces is increasing. Says nothing about the number of marriages increasing as well. Is that 4.9% higher or lower than compared to 2003? |

"The jump in the divorce rate comes at a time when the number of Koreans tying the knot with foreigners has actually dropped. Last year, 39,071 Koreans married foreigners, 4,744 fewer than the 43,815 in 2005.
Among the divorces involving international couples last year, more than 63 percent of them were Korean men divorcing their foreign wives."

"One out of eight marriages in Korea was of a mixed-race couple last year, new statistics showed yesterday.
The surging number of international marriages is taking up a large proportion of the nation's dwindling marriage rate.
According to Supreme Court statistics based on the national family register, international marriages took 12 percent of the total number of marriages last year. Among the 337,000 couples that registered marriage, 39,000 were mixed-race."

I'm confused. Were these marriages 'international' or 'mixed race'? Those are not the same thing. |

I don't think the number of marriages in 2006 should be correlated with divorces in 2006. Most people don't get divorced in the first year. Usually, it is after at least 2 years when they finally realize it isn't going to work. So, what were international marriage rates 2 or 3 years ago? |

As international wedding rate soars, divorces do too
"A total of 6,187 Koreans married to non-Koreans got divorced last year, up from 2,784 in 2003, according to data from the Supreme Court released yesterday. A total of 4.9 percent of all divorces involved a non-Korean spouse, up from 1.6 percent in 2003.
Most of the divorces occurred between Korean men and non-Korean wives in rural regions."

Well this tells me that Korean men are divorcing their Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai or whatever spouse that they found over the internet with one of those online marraige services. The odds of those marraiges actually working out is dismall.
Imagine a woman from one of these countries coming over to Korea and then being dumped in a small town in the middle of nowhere. I have seen many of them at immigration and I always end up thinking how in the world they manage. It must be very difficult for them to settle down and have a good life here in Korea.

So I am thinking that these marraige have a high divorce rate and that can push up the international or mixed race marraige (call it what you want) divorce figures. |
Well, there's Korean Herald style reporting for ya! Take an incident that's probably very specific and apply it to the whole kit'n caboodle. |

In my mind there are two kinds of "international marriages" the first being Koreans married to westerners and the second being Koreans married to someone from another asian country.
I'd like to see numbers for both of those seperate. Just curious if anyone can get them? |

What I find interesting is that the article starts off by saying that it's the Korean side who divorced their foreign spouse... uh... how about the other way round? |

New evidence shows that the problem behind Korean and foreigner marriages is actually the Korean person's fault. The evidence is in the statistics. All Korean and foreigner relationships that ended in divorce had one common factor, that there was a Korean person involved in the marriage. there were more divorces now than in 1920, when there were many Korean-Japanese marriages. Obvioulsy, it is the Korean person's fault.
you heard it here first, from Antonio the Great, Korean Herald style reporter... |
