How about what Bill Maher said that got him fired from ABC's Politically Incorrect?

In that vein, I do think Imus will be able to claw back up from the ashes. Particularly since he apologized. (Did Maher ever feel the need to apologize??)

What Maher said was true. If people would actually listen to what he said you would know that.

Imus is a putz, but should not have been fired. People like stevemcgarret, the biggest dink on this board, calling for others to be fired is laughable.

He didn't lose the right to say what he wants to say. He lost his job.

Don't the program advertisers also have the right to choose which shows to advertise in? Don't MSNBC and CBS have the right to use the programming they think will bring in the most advertisers?

For what it's worth, I've never listened to him so I don't really care whether he's on the air or not.

Don't expect Hite to discern such subtle distinctions in this thread since his head is always where the sun doesn't shine.

Of course not. Maher is a pompous pri-ck from the word "go." Even Imus has more class than he does. Maher reminds me of Leykus out in Lala radio land.

Notice how none of these guys can keep a marriage going? What woman would want to stay with them despite their salaries?

Now you have shown you know as little about entertainment as you do about war, politics, social development, etc etc etc etc

See, you have no idea what you are talking about, Maher doesn't want to get married. You see, when you don't listen, you end up an ignorant old fart.

I really wonder if the majority of Chinese people get offended by terms like that?

I am Chinese and may be I am too westernised, anglicised, avant-garde, what-have-you, but when I hear *racially discriminatory* terms being used in jest, I just laugh.

This is an incorrect appraisal of the situation. Imus did not engage in free speech, he used a racial slur. Free speech has never covered speech intended to hurt others. It covers the right to state an opinion, which is another matter altogether. In fact, verbal assault is specifically on the books of many states/municipalities. Etc.

There are a lot of ACLU lawyers who defend the rights of the Klan to conduct marches and publish hate that would disagree with you. As long as you're not calling for violence, free speech certainly allows you to be insulting, especially if it's directed at a group or a race. There are libel laws but you can't libel a race. Calling a woman's basketball team nappy headed ho's is insulting. And stupid. And if a network has a policy they should be free to fire Imus under that policy. However, no one would believe the whole team is comprised of ho's. "Oh you're from that basketball team. You're a ho. I'm not going to give you this job." A court would quickly recognize that it's just a silly statement. It's like when Apple called Sagan a butt head and Sagan sued for libel. A butt head might be insulting but it's not a well defined term under the law. No one would believe Sagan has a butt for a head.

And simply because certain laws are on the books does not imply they're constitutional. It may be the case that no one has yet bothered to challenge the law. There are certainly a lot of old laws still on the books that prohibit religious heresy. No one tries to lay those charges and no one challenges them constitutionally.

Anyway, I thought Rosie was on solid ground when she poked fun at Trump, like he's not exactly one who should be dispensing moral advice. But her recent 9/11 comments just paints her as a total idiot.

Indeed. Maher was simply trying to say "don't trot out the tired old platitudes". The guys who bombed Oklahoma were cowardly terrorists. The guys flying to planes into the WTC were evil SOBs but not cowardly.

Given the divorce rate, it's no surprise. How many times has Newt Gingrich been marred?

Ching ... "Chong"?

Ummmm ... sounds funny. Rosie likes to think she's a comedian, no?
Huh? You no spreak Ingrrish-eeeeee? Laughing

What's it really mean?

Either way, Rosie should not be fired because of her all too stupid & potentially "offensive" jokes Crying or Very sad

A much better reason would be her daring to question the "official" state sanctioned & spun 9/11 "story"

Just don't tell anybody Wink

I don't care whether what Maher said is true or not (much less what you think of it, Hite). My point was merely to bring up what happened to Maher. Seems like he got fired for saying something unpopular at the time. Imus went farther, true, by insulting specific individuals. I don't think Maher should have been fired, and Imus, having apologized, probably should not have been either.

I was referring specifically to shock jocks and their marital histories, not comparing neo-cons and neo-coms.

To all:

You can bet your sweet azz that if Rosie had made such an "innocuous" imitation of blacks, her fat azz would already be out the door. Now that's the hypocrisy of it. It's taboo to even think of offending the sensibilities of black people but of course white men are free game, as are Asians.

Actually, I think the most fitting penalty for all these shock jocks and social commentators would be to force them to host a show together and let them bash each other.

Freedom of Speech is absolute. Rosie and all the others mentioned have the right to say anything they want. She should not be fired for her racially insensitive remarks or other offensive comments.

But, Rosie is stupid, not funny despite her feeble attempts, and boring. She damages the show. People tune out because of her. She should be fired for those reasons.

Same for Bill Maher. I enjoy much of what he has to say. But, he's so annoying I can only stand to watch him about 5 minutes a year.

The same also goes for many of the CE threads and posters. Ranting, posturing and insults obliterate meaningful commentary, discussion and sharing of opinions. You've got the right to say it, but who wants to hear it?
