Tories and NDP blast Liberal-Green candidate deal
Mike De Souza, CanWest News Service
Published: Friday, April 13, 2007
OTTAWA The leaders of the federal Liberal and Green parties confirmed Friday the Grits will not field a candidate against Green Leader Elizabeth May in the next federal election, leaving the way clear for her to battle Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay in the Nova Scotian riding of Central Nova.

It was also announced, Mays party will not field a Green candidate in Dions Montreal-area riding of St-Laurent-Cartierville.

The news forced both leaders to fend off accusations they had cooked up a back-room deal.

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, right, looks on as Green Party Leader Elizabeth May fields a question as they announce an unusual political alliance in New Glasgow, N.S. on Friday, April 13, 2007. The Liberals won't run a candidate in the riding of Central Nova where May hopes to win a seat in the House of Commons in the next federal election.

I didn't think Stephane Dion was going to be a match for Stephen Harper, but I'm surprised that he's doing this bad. I think the main reason the Conservatives aren't looking into calling an election anytime soon (besides the fact that there could be a backlash in doing so) is that they're just standing by and waiting to see if the Liberal party implodes first.

Seems Belinda Stronach has been studying the political charts and doesnt like what she sees ahead for the SS Liberal Party.

How else to explain her decision last week to abandon the party for a return to private enterprise and the welcoming confines of the Magna International boardroom?

After all, if Stronach displayed anything over the course of her short political career, it was a determination to be one of the political power brokers.

From the moment she first displayed a public interest in politics, it was clear she planned on being a player hence her role in nurturing discussions between Alliance Leader Stephen Harper and PC boss Peter MacKay, which lead to the creation of the Conservative Party.

Despite a non-existent political past, Stronach immediately sought leadership of the new party, which she lost to Harper in early 2004.

Just over a year later, in May 2005, she abandoned the party shed only recently tried to lead, crossing the floor to Paul Martins Liberals.

Her rationale for the betrayal? Shed decided Stephen Harper was too socially conservative for her to work with.

Skeptics were not impressed by Stronachs attempt to take the high moral ground, suggesting her rationale for quitting the Tories might have been more convincing if shed decided to sit as an independent, after quitting on principle.

Instead, she moved directly into a cabinet chair, a first-term MP appointed as Human Resources Minister on her first day as a member of the Grits.

Stronach, said her critics, wasnt prepared to live aboard what she believed to be a sinking ship.

Fast-forward two years, and its easy to draw the same conclusion about her actions: seeing her new party stall under its new leader, Stronach has decided to once again abandon ship, leaving Stephane Dion and crew dead in the water.

The disappearance of such a high-profile, youthful MP might be expected to be something of a blow to the Grits especially since this MP is so clearly attracted to power.

Given her political ambitions, do you think shed be headed back to the private sector if it looked like Stephane Dion would be handing out cabinet seats in a few months?

Unlikely.

So its impossible to ignore the fact that Stronachs decision suggests she doesnt hold out hope for a Liberal victory in the next election.

Depressing, isnt it, Stephane?

Well, perhaps it shouldnt be when you consider Stronach's record in predicting political success.

After all, the last boat she bailed on made a miraculous recovery at sea; it was Stronachs rescue ship that ended up taking on water.

In short, for all her ability in the boardroom, Stronach has shown a distinct inability to back a political winner.

And now shes abandoned the Liberals.

Dont despair, Stephane theres hope yet.

haha, Belinda.....she realized she wasn't going to be leader soon so she got out. I think the funniest thing is how she screwed Martha Hall Finley once again, Finley would have run in Aurora had Belinda just told her she was quiting.

Hard to say whether the Green deal will benefit Dion. But it's being viewed negatively by the press, mainly because anything Dion does goes wrong. Jack Layton is correct in asserting that this deal undermines democracy. May has been saying for weeks that she was hoping to get the Liberals and NDP to withdraw from Central Nova. How are fewer choices better for constituents? P-Mac will take the riding anyway, with May and the NDP battling for second.

I think that it's going to peeve off a lot of senior liberals in that riding despite it being "Peter MacKay's riding" basically leaves them sitting on their hands.. doesn't hurt the Green's as much as it does the Liberals.. Conservatives are just sitting idly by. They won't call an election up to now they've had shrewd strategists who gotten them where they are.. but.. you never know..

One interesting thing I just remembered: with parties now getting $1.75 per vote since campaign finance was reformed, this amounts to a 10 349 - 1,810 * 1.75 = $14,943 loss for the Liberals as well. I never saw this point mentioned on any of the articles or blogs I read.

I'm all for it-one less Liberal in the House, and it discredits both Dion and hte Green Party-until the Greens get officaial Party status in the House of Commons, and not using the loser platform of proportional representation, no appearances in the nationally televised debates for Ms., May thnk you.

Belinda Stronanch and Liz May both lied down and thought of England -for the good of Canada!
