Or why do they seem to like it a lot more than most other nationalities I've spoken to???
I've discussed this w/ various American and non-American friends. The most logical explanation we could come up with was the parallel between Koreans and their feelings towards being compared w/Japan, and those of Canadians being compared to Americans. There's nothing that pisses off a Canadian more (it seems,) than to be told they're like the U.S. And nothing sets off a Korean than if you draw any parallels to how they're tyring to copy, and eventually surpass Japan (maybe implying their emulating the Japanese and have less of their own identity. The 'Underdog syndrome' if you will. I know I'm going to get my ass handed to me by some ple on this thread...but I don't care. I think I've found the answer. Thoughts????? |

You're probably giving the matter too much thought. Low taxes and warmer weather are probably the main reasons. Canadians love Japan too. |

Yeah, prepare for a lot of angry responses.
While I'm not going to posit WHY I think Canadians enjoy Korea alot (I really don't know, or think I know), I will say that the number of Canadians who really love Korea is quite high. While I know they're out there, I haven't personally met a lifer who's American yet. In fact, I know lifers from all the other major nations that come here for ESL teaching (NZ, Aussies, England and Canada), but no US lifers. Not sure why. |

Candadian expats enjoy the best tourist benefits in Korea (they get a six month tourist visa stamp on their passport). And they are the only country to enjoy this. I have met many Canadian fellows who relish with glee at being the most privileged foreign nation in Korea because of this. Americans just get a measly 30 days. I'm an American, but I'm not bitter.

I don't know Canadians love korea, but
Korean like Canadians.
Why ???
Canadians in korea don't show the same attitude that Americans show to korean.
The attitude of Americans in korea are.....
" Well, we saved your country during korean war, why you are not appreciate to us FOREVER ? " that kind of attitude.
Also Canadians in korea are not highschool drop-out like so many GIs who stationing in korea, they are much better educated and their behaviors are much better, so generally speaking, korean like Canadians a lot more than Americans, this is my personal opinion.

I think mithridates has hit it.
For a lot of Canadians I know here, bright, talented Canadians at that, they're in a holding pattern until they find a job elsewhere back home, and taking advantage of the lower taxes, instant work, and ease with which they pay off those big bills and save money.
I've even heard a few Canadians joke that you're out of the loop as a Canadian unless you've gone to Asia to teach ESL. It definitely does seem to be a trend, and the Canadian government doesn't seem to have enough interest in changing it.
I think all these factors are greatly amplified for Eastern Canadians, who come from some of the most beautiful and friendly territory in Canada, but who have the hardest time finding work (although in recent years it has been better to find work.) But by 2007, there's such a well-worn path that they may as well start burrowing a subterranean geo-elevator shaft straight from Toronto to Seoul and start whisking people back and forth in little pods. |

Is this a troll?
While I am sure that there are some Americans who believe this or have this attitude, I have yet to meet one.
As for the dropouts, the US military has started accepting soldiers VERY recently (as in this year) who haven't completed high school, but I don't see what that has to do with behaviour. Like crazy_arcade said, everyone will just see the white face and blame it on Americans. |

I don't profess to know the inner workings of the US army, but I've heard reports from long before this year that some recruits didn't finish high school. The one article in particular I recall mentioned the army was taking gang bangers from the Chicago area and dropping them in Iraq. Apparently the appearance of gang graffitti in Baghdad was disturbing some. This doesn't neccessarily mean the lesser educated recruits wind up in Korea though. |
