Does anyone out there have an idea what the game is about for this lesson? I've read through the English translation of the lesson plans and it makes no sense at all.

I don't have any of the cards they are talking about and I am not sure what they are doing with them even if I did have cards.

Can anyone make some sense out of this?

Here is what I've got:

Let's play 'Ordinal Number Game'
 Before starting, Teacher explains about ordinal number.
(Show some number cards) First, Second, What is next?
3rd.

Let me show you how to play the game.
Here we go!


1. Let's review today's lesson.
 Review the activity with the number cards(1～31) used in 'Ordinal Number Game'


(Gather the cards and raise them up)
I'll mix the cards very quickly.
Please say 'stop' If I stop mixing, I'll guess the card. OK?
(Mix them up quickly)
Stop.
Second.
No. Up.
(Try again) Fourth.
Right.
 If the teacher can't guess in 3 tries, look at the card and say the number.

2. Good-bye, everyone.

Hmmm....I have the Korean version of the book but that game isn't listed. But then again I use the old manual. Hope someone else can enlighten you.

From what I read, the game seems vaguely familiar. Basically you get some cards (maybe from the book or maybe not) and they have the ordinal numbers on them. You pick a number and the students have to guess. Whoever gets it right, goes up and picks a number...Perhaps that's it?

Yeah, I don't have cards either. I haven't gotten to that chapter yet, so I'm in the clear for another week. I don't know about you, but my students are very very very low level, and they struggled with the concept of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th when it was introduced in Chapter 1. Going from 1 to 31 will be a nightmare, so I'll probably have to modify the game slightly.

Anyway, I guess you just make some cards, numbered 1 to 31, and shuffle them around. Have students say "stop," and you show them the card you've chosen. You haven't looked at it yet, and you're trying to guess what it is. Say the number is "10." You might guess "2nd" at first, and the students will have to say "up," meaning you should guess a higher number. You guess 20th next, and the students will say "down." Your last guess is 15th, and once your students will say "no," you'll check your card.

The main idea is to practice their listening abilities and to associate sounds with numbers. The first part of each chapter is to target listening, so you're not having them produce any of the ordinal numbers yet. (That's why you're guessing, not them). I guess if your students are pretty advanced, you could lead the game for a few turns and then have another student jump in. Ugh, I can just imagine that chapter with my class . . . I don't think it'll be as disasterous (sp?) as Chapter 2, trying to make them give directions . . . So far "I like spring" seems to be right in their wheelhouse . . . we should be doing it the whole year, haha.

The game and the review activity are 2 different things.

As for the game, I just went around the room and had each student sound off an ordinal number.

Student A: First
Student B: 2nd
Student C: 3rd
Student D: 4th
etc... until I got to the last student.

And then I had the last student start from 1st again and went back through.

The review activity should be done with students in pairs, not teacher/student.

1 student shuffles the cards and pulls one out, the other student will try to guess the number on the card. They get 3 tries, where after each try a student says higher or lower.

I used this book last year and never played that game. I have the same manual and it's not listed. The games I have are

1. the ordinal number train
Student A:1st
Student 2: 2nd
Student 3: 3th...ohhhh you're out....

Or some crap like that and game #2

2. Stand in order
Basically everyone gets in line based on their birthday
Then we check....

Oh well....I'm glad I don't have to do that crappy card game

Sorry, I was talking to pkang, but your post slipped in before I submitted.

There are different versions of the same textbook floating around. You'll notice that sometimes the characters are different, or sometimes there's a picture of a man in one book where there's a picture of a woman in another. But, from what I understand, all public elementary schools ought to be using the same text (in reality, most do, but some don't). On the GEPIK site you'll find English-language versions of the teacher's manuals, which correspond to the texts we're probably using. That's what I was talking about, and that's what the OP posted in the first post. (He's talking about the "Let's Play" game from Chapter 4, Part 1). I have the same version of the book, so I was trying to clarify what I thought the game was about.

I think the number cards are printouts from the TEACHERS CD.

If you want to check before I get to work, put the CD in the computer and click lesson 4.

You should see the links for period 1 2 3 4 and an extra link.

Click the extra link and a picture page of supplemental material will pop up. Click each picture to get the printable version. Click the printer link to print them off.

I will check when I get to work tomorrow and confirm whether that is in fact the case for lesson 4 period 1.
