I got the news from watching the cafeteria news bulletin board at my university right now...all I can say, it was a real shocker....
How is this news and the "revelation" that the shooter was Korean being perceived back in Korea?
How are both Korean and foreigners taking the news?

To those of you who have friends, relatives or who just know people who study at V-Tech, my heart goes out to you...

It's night now, but I'm sure I'll hear about it in the morning.

I was at a staff meeting before the news broke that it was a Korean, and my boss was telling me that she heard it was some Chinese guy.

Koreans hate americans. Today they were protesting in front of the American airbase in Osan..Chanting Yanks Go HOme!!! Those "Yanks" are the ones trying to save koreans from a possible slaughter by N korea's army. If you want to know the respect koreans have for americans,...you just got it in VA!

A major Chinese government official publicly expressed deep regret when the student was still rumored to be of PRC nationality. Has the Korean government officially responded now that it's confirmed to be a Korean?

Speaks volumes to me and I'm not surprised.

blynch:

Figures you couldn't guess. Because to Chinese even the hint of loss of national face, especially toward Westerners, is reason enough to express regret even if its based on innuendo.

You can bet your sweet azz that we didn't hear a peep out of the Korean government until the gunman's identity (family name Cho) was solidly confirmed.

So whenever someone mentions the death of those 2 middle school girls by American Soldiers, you can just mention the deaths of those 31 students killed by that crazed South Korean..

I am concerned, but then again, this can happen anywhere with anyone pulling the trigger.

I hope this incident will humble the "victimization" Koreans feel about themselves, as one of their own turned out to be a crazed Korean student...

Wasn't one of the gunmen at the Baslan shooting turned out to be also a Korean-Russian muslim convert?

Well the killer this time was also a Korean wanna-be-muslim..... even wrote his muslim nickname on his arm...

more info about "Cho Seung-Hui" - including his picture, his writings (play script), profile, his ISLAM nickname, his hatred against his "Israel professor", his depression and medication, the gun he bought and used etc etc

Why should the Korean government apologize until they know whether it was someone of Korean decent? Or why should they apologize at all. The guy was raised in the US. I have no hard feelings toward Koreans because of this. It simply wasn't their fault.

But think of the generalizations koreans make when a soldier, teacher or any other foreigner does something bad in Korea?

I don't hold any grudges either, but it does raise some questions about how far Koreans should judge other people now that people, especially Americans, now have something to judge Koreans on.

Sometimes, the shoe feels painful being on the other foot.
