I have a new boss. He's a nice guy and has lots of ideas for kick starting my failing hagwon. Some are good: new curriculum. Some bad: phone teaching.

Now he's organized this trip to Seoul Land. I was all up for it until I found out it was on a Saturday!

What's the best way to get out of this without all the "It's not in my contract to work Saturdays" business?

Ask for overtime?

Or just tell him you are busy. He can't MAKE you go. ALthough it would probably earn a lot of brownie points for you if you did.

Seoul Land is fun. They serve beer. Get drunk and ride the Black Hole 2000 until you puke.

Or tell him you have previous plans.

I mostly agree with kat2. The only difference would depend on the bosses attitude about it. If he EXPECTED me to go, I would make other plans. If really was nice about it, and was just hoping I would go, I probably would, cause as kat2 said, brownie points to burn, and maybe slack or a favor down the road when you need it...

Yeah, I don't see the big deal. If its a one-off trip, do it and stop whinging. If it's a weekly or very often kinda thing, that'd be different. Same thing goes with the after-work dinners/gettogethers. Do them occasionally to keep the good feelings in the office, but you don't have to do them every time.

Seoul Land? Screw the rides they want to go on. I'd go just to ride the Sky Swing(?) again and again.

Assuming everything is paid for, I'd go.

Ask him to book and pay for a room for you at a 5 star hotel so you can spend the night and come back on Sunday.

Yeah I guess I'll do it for the brownie pionts. I just don't like the way he seems to expect me to go. He hasn't said, "by the way do you know this thing is on saturday?" I just saw the date printed on a leaflet.

Be sure to give it the old: "I do (XXXXX) every saturday but I will make an exception just this once". You will get the brownie points, have some fun, and make it clear that he can't make plans for you every saturday Smile

Good boss - happy to go. Bad boss - screw you. I probably do far more on Saturdays than almost anyone not contracted to do so. I have a great ... well I'm sure exactly who my boss is - technically the figure-head principal - but I have a great school.

If he wanted you to teach on Sat for free...screw him.
He's probably being a nice guy and thinks you'll want to go. Just go and enjoy your self. Hang out with the kids for a bit then ditch them.

The favor bank is alive and well in Korean schools. The trick is to racking up those points at first while remaining firm on your obligations to the school and not getting run over.

But, if the boss is a dick, simply hold up the contract and say "No saturdays, I'm busy."

If I were going to do it (without overtime pay), I would certainly make it positively clear that it was a huge pain in the arse and that I was only doing it as a favour to him and for the kids.

If he never told me it was going to be on Saturday, and then I saw it posted on the wall, I would make a stink. I'd probably sh#t in his coffee and tell him, "this is how my Saturday tastes right now, arsehole, thanks a lot."

Dude, if it's paid for, just go. My boss took the entire staff skiing, all expenses paid. Might as well go with a positive attitude and have a good time.
