| No one is righteous. But I think we should still try to live a righteous life... |
This idea of being "righteous" and that sex somehow falls outside of this category baffles me. I know the idea of righteousness is inherently religious and based upon the edicts of the Bible or Koran or Book of Mormon or whatever one adhere's to. But if you take away these benchmarks, who decides what righteousness is? It seems that most religious folk of any stripe can defend all sorts of greed and unscrupulousness that harms others but will have a fit about the private sexual practices of an honest man/woman which harm no one. All of the 3 big monotheistic faiths are utterly OBSESSED with sex, seemingly because it's one of the things they can't really control in themselves or society. And by society, I mean EVERY society since man appeared on this sphere.
If you remove the Bible or other holy books from moral arguments, usually the defense goes to "natural law," at least for Christians. Homosexuality is not righteous because it is unnatural. Then when homosexuality is observed time and time again in the animal kingdom, Christians write it off as "fallen nature." How convenient. The same with sex. There is nothing more natural than young, hormon-driven teens experimenting with sex. I would love to see my children stay innocent as long as possible too, but the fact is that is not the way they are made. It almost seems "God" wants them to do the dirty deed as he has given them an almost overbearing sex drive. Oh wait, that's fallen nature again, not God. Only a twisted mind could look objectively at sexual pleasure and label it as dirty and sinful. Oh wait, if you get married it suddenly and magically is righteous.
Teens having sex (or adults) is not unrighteous. It is a fact of life. It's happening everywhere and has been happening for eons. A few hundred years ago kids their age were getting married and starting their own families. Now they are expected to suppress their sexual urges for up to a decade or more. It's ridiculous. The shame and guilt thrust upon them is what is immoral in my book. The same adults who are preaching abstinence generally aren't abstaining for the next decade, nor did they probably abstain in their youth. Maybe teens should make a pact with mom and dad- "I won't have sex until my marriage day if you two also abstain from any and ALL sexual activity until I'm married." Seems fair to me.
Teens need to be taught responsibility. Not only in sexuality, but in all sorts of life areas. Our expectations of them are way too low. Society's low expectations and condescending attitute towards them breeds rebellion
Some of the unhappiest friends I have from my childhood are the few Christians who were abstinate throughout their teen years, then married the first person who looked in their direction after they were 18 years old so they could hop into bed "legally." Yes, they were righteous. The problem is they were immature and irresponsible and are now paying the price in misery because, unfortunately, divorce will also make them unrighteous. |

Women in Saudi Arabia are protected thanks to people who buy into patriarchy-people like you

| Not sure what you're talking about here. Who was talking about self-righteousness? The issue was about man's weakness and inability to live a completely righteous life and why this should not be celebrated and used as an excuse not to try to live a righteous life. |
I probably live a more righteous life than anyone on this board. Just because I like sex doesn't make me less righteous. But thanks anyway. |
Don't forget you're also smarter tahn eveyone else on the board-not counting your reading comprehension |

Actually, I am right most of the time, read my predictions.
I don't buy into patriarchy at all, listen, I will repeat this for the 3rd time so maybe you will understand. This HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSLIMS. I brought Saudi Arabia into it because someone else brought up the Koran. My personal belief, Saudi Arabia (and Sharia law) are disgusting. |
