| while sister cities seem basically useless pragmatically speaking, i think it would be a nice gesture. |

Surely nobody in Korea needs to apoligize for anything related to the shootings. A modest gesture of sympathy is at least in order, though, considering the guy was a Korean citizen committing terrible crimes as a guest of the United States, the city and his institution.

He'd been living in the US for 15 years, since he was eight. How long does he have to stay before he's no longer a guest? |
About as long as Michelle Wie. |
As Michelle wie's dad put it: "Although she has a passport from the U.S. and was born there, she's one hundred percent Korean."
Same - same for most if not all Koreans who go to the States: They stay Korean through-and-through for, like, ever. |
Again, have you ever spent much time with a fresh-off-the-plane Gyopo who grew up in the US? Some may not want to see themselves as Americans but they sure aren't Koreans. |

Longer. I've been here close to 15 years and I am told that I am just a guest. |
You're a long-time foreign resident. You didn't grow up here, and there are visual barriers that don't exist in a country like America where the visual majority makes up only 60-65% of the population. |

Yep, and if he accomplished great things it's because he spent the last 15 years in America! It couldn't have been anything to do with Korea.
If he goes on a rampage, he's Korean though of course..
The hypocrisy continues. He WAS American at his time of death. He certainly acted like one. |

1. Thank you for thinking that. That makes at least one person. According to many Koreans (and many posters on this board) I am simply a guest.
2. No, I didn't grow up here if you mean that I didn't spend my 'formative years' here. Are you suggesting that one 15-year period is more important than another 15-year period in terms of residency or citizenship?
3. The only visual barriers I've seen in this country are windshields. |

I said this on a thread that was closed but I think it is relevant as far as nationality goes....
Normally I'd say it's up to him but he's dead and can't tell us what he thinks.
My opinion would be Korean-American. Influences on both sides, even if most of his time was spent in The U.S.
I consider myself to be Jamaican-American and I wasn't even born there...so there are quite a range in putting that designation on yourself or someone else... |

Nope. That was kind of the point I was trying to make. |

Who's telling you that? My recruiter told me that after 12 years, I would be considered Korean with full access to the A row ladies. |

Chosun Ilbo is already distancing themselves from him and calling him Korean-American

Wow...what a venemous and dumb thing to say.
After all, wasn't Woo Bum-Kon the biggest spree killer in modern history in 1982 (57 dead in a few hours)? |

Why? He lived almost two thirds of his life in America. Do you really believe he would in any way resemble the same man who lived all 23 years in Korea.
come on.. |

| You are missing the point... Koreans will claim as their own, anyone of (dubious) Korean ethnicity who does something good, yet deny anyone of (legitimate) ethnicity who does something bad. |

leebumsik, Diver you both need to learn.
Until you get your AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP, you are a GUEST. Nothing more.
You are in the US as long as the US government will allow.
you arent just "american" after so long. Thats the dumbest thing ive heard yet.
So some of these foreigners whove been living in korea for 10-20 years, and speak fluent Korean, are they korean now, even though they like only have an F visa? of course not! youd say that was ridiculous, so, what makes you think the US is different.
Once you get your citizenship, your an official bonfied American. |
