As I read the news reports on the web tonight, it amazes me that such a disastrous (sp?) fire could have happened from such an (apparently) small volume of flammable liquid...the subway car seats and interiors must have contained a lot of combustible plastics or polymers. I can't help but think that if the interiors were designed with noncombustible seats and other materials, as they are on commercial airliners, the number of dead and injured might have been a lot fewer. |

I was thinking the same thing.
Also, I believe that it started inside a subway car. Maybe I am wrong. If so, how did it spread to others?
With so little information to go on, it is just speculation at this point. However, there must have been some sort of negligence involved, either with the structure itself or the response. Are there not fire extinguishers nearby? Call me ignorant, but I just don't get it.
Tragic. |

I couldn't understand the Korean News because I don't know it yet, but it was obvious from the TV graphics that Koreans are asking/discussing the same things. |

It is really tragic that something could happen in Daegu. I have been here with my family for three years. The people here could have not been more receptive and kind. I have a Filipina wife and two little boys the people of Daegu could not have been more decent, friendly and kind,
I was going to take my older boy downtown when I saw what was happening here on ESL Cafe.
My heart goes out to the victims, the families and the friends.
I am really sorry for what happened. |

Why is the arsonist receiving medical help? He should be shoved into a jail cell with no access to a doctor. |

Well probably for a number of reasons. One they want to prosecute him under the law, they want to find out if he was working alone or with others. Even in the US and other western countries criminals are given medical treatment before and after conviction.

according to the bbc, the subway system itself provided the fuel for the fire - a constant and powerful supply of fresh air. just imagine that turrent of wind that comes through the seoul metro and you can imagine just how strong and fast the fire would have spread.
so the fire was too well venitlated. which makes an awful lot of sense in retrospect, but makes me wonder why such systems are not offset with sprinkler systems. anyone got any info on this?
for those that asked about how quickly the fire spread to other parts of the train, my guess is that the fire spread to the other carriages through broken windows and the open connecting doors between the carriages. the poor koreans in the train probably weren't thinking of containment.

I love it. He killed 124 people, possibly more, and I am cold because I have no sympathy for him. |

The man who set the fire also seems to be mentally ill. (check out this page: http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200302/kt2003021820292411950.htm
These situations are not always so black and white as we would like them to be. And it's not accepted in this or many other countries to just forgo someone's human rights when they commit a crime. If they denied him medical treatment, it would probably just be fuel for his defense attorneys as well. There are a lot of factors. |

I wonder if anyone actually has sympathy for this guy. His mild psychosis isnt an excuse for anything, and I really hope he dies in pain. Sorry, not trolling, I just have absolutlely nothing but hate and contempt for this guy. |

As someone with a mentally ill family member, I do have some sympathy for the guy. I have a lot for his family too. |
