I don't get angry by Svetlana. He/she is entitled to his/her opinion and has the right to express it. I view Svetlana as a misled individual, manipulated by hate and unable to separate the actions of government from the actions of citizens. I have a similar pity for a dog on the street that is angry at everyone who passes by. It has been beaten, kicked, can't find food and will do anything to protect it's remaining territory.

| Bad Timing. If this happened before VA Tech then it would have had big coverage - not as big as the shooting but big enough. |

| Does anyone else notice how almost all of the parade of students CNN has on camera seem to be smiling during their interviews??? What is wrong with americans??? Do they think they will be "Discovered"?.......... |
I normally don't agree with Svetlana (and I don't really now), but I had a similar thought when watching the news coverage. Not about Americans though, just people in general. While the video footage was showing mourners during a candle light vigil I couldn't help but shake this 'slimy' feeling as I could see some young women who really looked like they were 'fake crying' or forcing themselves to cry. Maybe I'm totally misreading them, but I've taught middle school girls in Canada before, so I've often seen 'crocodile tears'. Maybe they felt they needed to do this to show they were sad...who knows.
I also remember when there was a Korean soldier (I think) who was executed in Iraq. All of the news crews were INSIDE the parent's apartment. When the parents found out their son had been excuted, the cameras were there to cover their wailing and screaming. It was horrible to watch! Which makes me ask the question. Why would you allow the media in your home to capture that. And why do people speak to the media like two hours after their brother/sister/mother has been killed. I don't even think I'd be able to haul myself out of bed let alone talk to the media. When I see people do this it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I hope people don't feel I'm being too insensitive. I've been reading the news coverage on this story and feel horrible for these people and their families. Even my eyes welled up a few times (I'm usually not emotional). |

Maybe this belongs in the Off-topic forum... I'll let the MODs decide that.
CNN just reported that (coincidentally enough) 32 people just died in an industrial accident in which molten steel was poured from an accidentally dumped container onto those who waited below for it to be delivered.
Why have we not heard about the nationality or even the name of the guy who did this? Yeah, sure it was an "accident" but why haven't we heard about the families of those who died in as much (of not more) agony in a molten steel accident than those who died in VT. Is it because the VT victims were innocent bystanders and the miners were doing their jobs?
I just don't get it.
How is the VT tragedy any more (or less) horrific than this? Why are we supposed to focus on that (Virginia Tech shooting) rather than this (molten-steel dumping accident)? Why are deaths in America, or the West in general, more "newsworthy" than deaths in not-America or not-the-West? WTF is wrong with the international media that the tragedy in VT, acknowledged by ALL as being a "crazy guy with access to a gun" more tragic than a series of deaths in China where the administration doesn't give a damn about the safety or welfare of the workers in coal mines or steel mills? This is far from the first such accident, hell they are almost constantly in the news. We CAN stop this kind of tragedy, which makes it all the more tragic... There will always be crazy fukks who lose it and kill others, but this is an institutionalised apathy and why is that less tragic than what happened in Virginia? What is with the media and why does it play to the "Whites Only" small, racist club?
I just don't fukking get it. |
As far as I know you are only reading/watching media that is based in the West, therefore it is Western-centric. I am sure Al-Jezera (sp?) shows different news and different angles then those news channels in the West.
I did see that CNN.com (International version) had put the Iraq bombings as the headline this morning. |

| I stopped watching CNN last night out of disgust for the sensationalism. I would watch Al-Jezeera if I spoke Arabic, or CCTV if I understood Chinese. |

Cho sent a multi-media presentation to NBC News in New York which they just received. It includes dozens of videos and a manifesto which makes reference to the "heroes" of Columbine. It also appears that he had been diagnosed as "mentally ill" and as a "danger to himself and others" and had been hospitalized at least twice because of his pyschological problems. They've already played some of the videos (which NBC made copies of after giving the originals to law enforcement officials...) It's an ongoing breaking story that can be gotten at the following link:

At least 200 people were killed by bombings in Iraq in the last 48 hours. To me that's far worse and much more significant than the killings at Virginia Tech.
The VT killings and the other school shootings are fairly rare compared to bombing in Iraq. I count one life as having the same value as another. Regardless of nationality. Therefore, Iraq is a thousand times more serious situation than VT. And, of course, it's ongoing. These won't be the last deaths in Iraq. |

Cause...
You cannot spin an industrial accident into eliminating the US 2nd Amendment. |
