Hey guys / gals.
If any of your kids make rude or jokey references to the VT incident today, just like to remind you to remind yourself that it's normal (sadly) for kids to react like this. They are children and despite most adults being in denial of it - kids are cruel, selfish, ferrel creatures on the main part without consciences. It's because they are kids, not because they are Korean.
We all (most of us) made the Etheopian jokes, the Need Another Seven Astronauts, Died in A Nasty Car Accident jokes when we were kids.
I think the fact of being here and being a minority makes us mroe sensitive to things like this. Things can more easilly be construed as personal attacks. Someone bumps into you at the subway and it's because you're not Korean (you fail to turn round and see the same person acting the same with fellow Koreans...)
Hey, I'm not apologising for it, you know, tell the kids, it's not funny and not cool.
But remember not to get too het up about it - they're just kids (read idiots) |

You utter imature idiot.
I post a well meaning OP and you have to cheapen it with your own angst.
If you have any self respect, please delete your above post which has no purpose and will serve no purpose other than to antagonise. And why not do some push ups, write a diary or go for a run, get your bad feelings about English teachers (of whom those on this baord are only a tiny representation) out of your system and then go focus on something positive or constructive in your life.
Do you really want to be the person that the post you wrote would suggest?
I ask you again, delete the above post. Then I'll delete this one. |

WAtch the mods lock this topic like they have every other one related to VA - without reason I might add. It's getting bloody annoying. |

Mods are locking the threads because people were complaining there were too many threads about the VT shootings. Mods can never win. Its either too many, or too late, or not enough moderation, to too much moderation. |

No, your intentions are good but don't say ANYTHING. Don't corrupt them by trying to explain something grown-upy from a different country
JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE. Leave that to the Korean teachers and their parents.

It is not that much of a big deal. People were killed and that is bad but it is nothing compared to a lot of the world. 30 people dying is not a major issue...millions die in Africa every year but no one cares about them.
It does suck but in a few weeks everything will die down and no one will care. People will move on to some new idiotic scandle or issue and not think about the shooting.
Compared to the enormous amount of deaths in Iraq...30 people seems like nothing to me. |

Again, sure I make Ethiopian jokes as a kid, but I'm sure if I had an Ethiopian teacher, standing right in front of me, I'd have the sense to not make jokes.
I actually hope a high-strung American teachers, who's a freaky waygook, beats the f*ck out of a Korean or two--IF THEY LAUGH ABOUT VT IN FRONT OF HIM. |

No, being kids is not good enough to excuse them for such inappropriate actions. Educating them though would be a good start. Guess that's why we're here. |

I'm always worried when I see this attitude about teachers' opinions in the classroom. Is it that some people think freaky stuff and assume that others do too, so everyone should keep their opinions out of the classroom? Joking about tragedy is human, and it doesn't belong in the classroom. You would be remiss to say nothing - the passive acceptance of inappropriate behavior in the classroom is no way to lead a class.
I appreciate your post, venus - it's a pleasant note in the wash of acrid vitriol around here this last day or two. And I totally agree with you. |

Yesterday in my dummies - I mean vocational - HS class we were doing Baby One More Time and when we got to 'lose my mind' I was explaining 'go crazy ... like yesterday - o-jay - in America - Migook - a Korean-American - Gyopo - lost his mind! Went crazy!'. Half of them looked like they had no clue what I was talking about. Otherwise the only discussions I've heard about it have been in the staff room, and the other teachers seem very embarrassed talking to me about it even when I stress that he was Korean in passport only. |

It's started to die down already. Yesterday was a nightmare. Nobody gives a toss today. It'll get debated to death for years on end by folks on here and in the media, but ordinary people have very short memories and tolerance for hammered-to-death big issues. I recall how wildly tedious, how repetitive, how desensitized one became, to the 7-7-05 London terrorist attacks. Intense interest, shock at first, very quickly becomes crushing, channel-changing tedium. Despite many people's wishful thinking otherwise, Korea's national soul-destroying, soul-searching catastrophe lasted 24 hours and it's now back to business as usual.

DUH!!!!!!!!! I mean don't debate about it. Yeah sure, tell them "Don't do that" incorporate it into the lesson if you want.
BUT, don't use it to try and spread your divine wisdom to Korea please.
Just DO YOUR JOB.
But, yes Venus your intentions are good I think. I may have had you wrong. Sorry. |
