|
|
Hi.
I'm THIS CLOSE to wanting to throw my crappy clothes-destroying old-model Korean washing machine off the roof. Instead I think I might just leave in the in the apartment when we move...
I've seen the TROMM washers at Costco. Are they washer/dryer combos? Do they really dry? Some of the run about 700,000 won.
We're going to have a kid, and I'm figuring having a washer/dryer will be handy when we're dealing with dozens of teeny tiny socks and stuff... who the hell wants to try to hang all those little clothes to dry? Sheets and towels, sure, but for some things, give me a dryer.
Do they work? |

I have a Tromm and it's been fine. It should be. They're bloody expensive. Mine was a wedding gift but we know it cost 800,000.
We used the dryer function for the first time the other day and my shirts came out quite wrinkly. |

Tromm is by LG and I don' t know of any others besides the front loaders and they are supposed to be pretty good. There are two types. The more expensive has a few more cycles, bells and whistles and the steam feature which is supposed to knock wrinkles out and can even be used to pretreat stains. I currently sell appliances. The LG are also supposed to be High Efficiency. There are also Kenmores among others that are HE. They are supposed to save you at least 50% on electricity and water costs. Hope this helps. |

My friend has a washer/dryer unit. I'm not sure what kind it is....I think it's Tromm. She got it used for a lot less than 700,000 - 800,000 won. I'll ask her how much and where she got it. This was in Busan.
She washed my clothes with it and it was the nicest my clothes have been in a long time.
Off topic BUT...Why in the blue hell are washing machines here so BAD?? |

Detergents you can buy here are too weak.
Used washing machines most ESL teachers have do not have hot water inlet. I mean they do but its not connected. So whites are never whites.
Tromm and other front-loading Europan-style washing machine have only cold water intake but they have an electric heating element that heats the water up to 90 degrees celisus for the white clothes cycle and washes for 1.5 hours. Then your whites are really whites. |

I wouldn't recommend using the dryer function as it's not the hot air type. The inside element heats the metal and your clothes come in contact w/ that and are supposed to dry. Much better and nicer to hang them outside, imho! |

Then based on the reports of washer/dryers here, anyone ever found a dryer? I'd love one of those two storey ones... |

Front loader. The phrase used in Korea is 'drum'.
In typical Korean consumer electronics style, all washing machines until about 5 years ago were top-loading cheap rubbish that chewed up clothes and broke all the time. Now, LG and Daewoo have decided that they will make quality washing machines on par with the western and Japanese companies. Great!........ah wait....crap...they're twice as expensive as the western equivalent. The chaebol have struck again!! |

I had one in my old apartment. Worked pretty good, but it was pretty loud. And not in that nice baby-go-to-sleep humming way. For some reason, it keeps starting and stopping and gurgling and going through different cycles every 5 minutes. But it's still kinda amazing that they can combine a washer and dryer into one.
Also, in typical Korean electronics fashion, it was missing an incredibly obvious and useful feature: the ability to stop it once it had started. I swear, I couldn't figure out how, and I read Korean and I read the whole instruction manual. It's like the same way my telephone doesn't have a button to kill the ringer. |

No problem. Just go to Costco and buy some Tide or Kirkland. |

Well, front loading (drum) is about 100,000 - 150,000 yen in Japan.
There is an LG one for 60,000 yen which is less bells & whistles, basic european model which retails for 300 euros in most countries in Europe.
So I do not see Japan as being cheaper than Korea. |

I've got a Tromm in my apartment, but I don't know what model it is. It takes about 80 minutes to wash the clothes, but it's quiet. I've never used the dryer function, but after washing the clothes are not very wet compared to other washers. I hang the clothes out, and they dry within a few hours. |
