Not this year. The free and cheap versions no longer allow for filing of the 2555 foreign earned income exclusion form. Between federal and state, filing was going to cost nearly $70 with TurboTax. TaxAct offers the same service for about $15 (and is a lot more user-friendly). |

I use taxslayer. It is a great service for 9.99. I used turbotax 5 years ago when it was free. |

Yes, I use Turbotax. But what the others recommended sounds like they may be better. |

Lets see what did I do... ahh Download a 1040 download a 2555EZ follow the instructions, put it in an envelope, and mail it..
This all if you didnt earn any income in america and you meet all the requirements. simple, easy, and will take you 15 mins max to do it.
And its free.
now state tax is another issue because its up to your individual state. |

I have a problem.
I have contacted two accountants in the U.S. and told them I'd pay to have them do the 2555,
and they are very confused.
I haven't filed in 3 years and I want to get "back on the books."
One accountant said I didn't have to even file - I disagree.
Another doesn't know what to do.
I tried to downoad the 2555 on the internet but it's too big.
Question:
1. Do I have to file?
2. Do I just fill out the 1040 and 2555 and mail it in.
Thanks in advance. |

You have to send in one form, but it's filed and accepted online. The form is basically just a verification thing.
Note: If you file your taxes, don't be surprised if a collection agency that has been looking for you for 6 years for a bill that you didn't even know existed comes looking for you suddenly. |

No problem on this end.
I have current credit and perfect credit.
I make sure to keep revolving debt and that is paid by automatic withdrawals to keep my credit current and FICO score decent. |

I thought the same. Apparently, I didn't get a phone line cancelled when I moved out just before coming to Korea. Was willing to pay at any time but didn't know about it. The agencies apparently use your last known address with the IRS to locate you (as my driver's license was updated).
6 years of not paying a bill equals a big-ass bill.

And if anyone used olt, try to sit down and do it in one sitting. I did it in two and had to click lots of continue buttons to return to where I had left off. |

This is why its worth it to me to pay $100 to have someone else worry about it. For state and federal tax filings, its completely worth it to me.
