Hello, my husband and I have been offered jobs at 2 public schools in Mokpo (he'll work at one and I'll work at the other - both are within walking distance of our apt.)

I'm just wondering if there are any things we need to look out for as far as public school contracts or working at public schools?

It seems like we have a good recruiter, contract and school. They're going to pay for us to stay in a hotel the first week with the rest of the newly hired English teachers from the district and train us for that entire week. Then we will be dispursed amongst our schools. Supposedly they're even going to pay for our food for that week.

Just let me know what you think. Thanks!

Very Happy

Public schools are usually much safer than a privately owned school. Bad things can happen at a public school, but usually it's because of an honest mistake and not some owner being a power hungry *beep* trying to keep your $$.

The expense paid training for the first week sounds right. At my district breakfast and lunch were kind of makeshift and not well thought out. However, they made up for it at dinner as were taken out to a fairly nice restaurant every night. The accommodations will likely be a dorm type set up and not a hotel (your Korean recruiter may not have the language skills to express this clearly). However, I have no specfic experience with Mokpo.

I have had no real problems at my public school. The job is in all material ways is just as it was advertised. Pay issues at my school are not a problem. My regular pay arrives on time every time. I am regularly offered extra teaching opportunities and frankly, more money than I expect keeps showing up in my bank account.

Sounds like a sweet deal for a couple. Good luck.

Watch if they try to take out a housing deposit. It's illegal.

Hasn't this been done ad absurdum?

It is technically illegal, according to a literal interpretation of Korean labor law. According to a more practical interpretation it is simply status quo. I seriously question the wisdom of asking that clause to be removed more than once. If they agree the first time, great. If not, forgettabouttit.
