That's the danger of this new information. Too many people will blame the gene, blame their parents for passing it on to them, and then resign themselves to a life of getting fatter and fatter. And presumably without knowing whether they've even got that double-copy of the "fat" FTO variant or not. I mean, it's not like fat people will be rushing to get tested, it is? For whatever would they do if (*gasp*) they haven't got it and the finger blame & responsibility points back in their faces? Can't have that.

This is an important point. I mean even if I do believe I might carry this gene, it's important not to blame mom and dad and get off my butt and to do something. I think the defeatist attitude might come when the weight doesn't come off and people get frustrated and think "why is this not happening... I'm just gonna go eat ben and jerry's. I give up". Instead of being obsessed about weight and size, we should be more concerned about health. Which is why even though I do not lose any weight when I exercise on a daily basis, I do it anyway because I know it's good for me.

Genetics and DNA is a young science.

If we agree its down to a gene, then why do 20% of Americans have this gene yet in virtually every other nation only 1% of people do?

Like the proverbial monkey that would type out the complete works of Shakespeare if given sufficient time, Junior has finally made an excellent post.

Honestly, this stuff is absolute rot.

Let's look at some obesity stats (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_obe-health-obesity) and merrily conclude that all those fat b**tard countries carry the obesity gene. Oh, thank heavens for that! For a moment there I thought it might have something to do with never walking anywhere, boozing the weekends away and having more McDonalds restaurants per capita (and God knows how many other fast food outlets) than other countries.

WAAH! It's my glands. WAAAH! It's my genes. WAAAH! It's my metabolism. No, fatties, it's because of food! Too much bloody food!

They won't resign themselves...they'll use it as an excuse to continue being gluttons. Lazy slobs are experts at finding excuses (remember gym class where the fat kids would always have a note from mom saying that he or she couldn't participate because he had a headache or she was having her period?). This one is a godsend for them.

I agree with PDX in that the focus should be on health and not size. I don't know if I have any particular "gene" but I come from a long line of big men and I'm a pretty big guy. But, I also jog/power walk for an hour every day. When I go for mountain hikes with my "thin" Korean co-teachers, they're breathing heavy in no time and I'm feeling great. I think genetics does play a factor in body type but I also think you have to do the best with what you have. I've often wondered about this when you see so many overweight foreigners and so few overweight Koreans. Maybe diet and lifestyle are part of the equation, but it's certainly not all of it. A lot of the Koreans I know inhale vast amounts of food and drink soju like it's water......yet they're stick thin. On the other side of the equation, I know a few Korean guys that pump iron religiously, yet they can't put on muscle to save their life. Mesomorphs, endomorphs and ectomorphs......I think there's a lot of truth to it.

I was wondering for a while now since the op whether we can genetically engineer a super blob...Look, up in the sky, it's a blimp, it's a pizza, it's Faster Blob.

Able to jump tall sandwiches in a single mouthful, slurp a six-course meal in a single bound, it's a super...market.

We'd rebuild him with recombinant DNA to reprogram him with a macro DNA of the fat genes, yea, that's it. That's the ticket.

Btw, who is the heaviest homo sapien in the world?

I think this guy was:

"Health officials said Manuel Uribe weighed 1,235 pounds when he made a desperate plea for help on national television in January."

But he lost 200 pounds.

The heaviest ever recorded "honor" probably goes to a woman: Carol Yager.

"Shortly before her death, however, she was able to fit through her custom-built 48" (121 cm) wide front door.[2] Published reports quoted her then-boyfriend as stating that he estimated her peak weight at about 1600 pounds (727kg),[3] but when questioned about this estimate, Yager's doctor declined comment."

The above picture looks like her child self is looking up at her adult self quite proudly in a Brady Bunch sort of way.

I think a small group of people have a gene that causes obesity. I wish I had the gene that made me eat all sorts of unhealthy food and still be thin.

I know a few people that eat non stop, don't exercise and they are still bone skinny. Their metabolism must be on overdrive or something. Instead of finding the gene that makes you fat, how about finding the gene that those people have.

We all know who I'm talking about. The person you secretly despise because they eat 3 times as much as you do, don't do jack squat but sit in front of the TV and eat, and they can never put on any weight.

Interesting how fat gene(s) never express themselves except when people eat more calories than they burn.

In line with this, I have found that my personal fat genes typically shut off when I eat less and excercise more. (I'm thinking of witing a diet book based on this principle.)

They found people with two copies of a "fat" version of a gene had a 70% higher risk of obesity than those with none, and weighed 3kg (6.5lb) more.

Those with 2 copies were only 6.5lbs or 3kg heavier than the average person. It's hardly the difference between a thin person and an obese one. There must be a lot of obese people with no fat genes then.

I can see how they'd be less able to lose weight but it's definitely not impossible. I wouldn't buy it as a legitimate excuse for anyone. I think it's definitely more to do with lifestyle than anything. An active person isn't going to weigh 100kg even with multiple copies of the gene. Likewise, someone who comes from a family that eats 5 cakes a day or whatever isn't going to be thin. I hope people don't seriously use this to legitimize their weight.

Last I checked, calories weren't floating around in the air. I would guess that if fat people would stop EATING TOO MUCH, they would become thinner. Seems like a good bet, right?
