MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine police and military are searching for a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer missing for nearly a week in a mountainous northern area, officials said Saturday.

Julia Campbell, 40, was last seen on April 8 in the town of Banaue in Ifugao province, where she had planned to hike alone, said U.S. Embassy spokesman Matthew Lussenhop.

The area, about 160 miles north of Manila, is famed for its mountainside rice terraces and pine forests. The armed wing of the Communist Party the New People's Army also operates there.

Being a former Peace Corps volunteer, this is rather distressing news today:

MANILA, Philippines Philippine authorities on Wednesday found a body they believe to be that of a missing American Peace Corps volunteer in a northern mountain town where she disappeared during a hike more than a week ago, an army general said.

Maj. Gen. Rodrigo Maclang told The Associated Press that a body matching the description of Julia Campbell, 40, from Fairfax, Va., was found buried with one foot protruding from the ground near the village of Batad. It was not clear whether she had been buried by someone or if she was covered by debris during a fall.

My prayers to all fellow PCVs, RPCVs and her family and friends.

I worked with her for a couple years in New York. Julia Campbell gave up her career in journalism to do something meaningful.
This is terrible.

(Thank you for posting the news. I am contacting other friends.)

Sorry to report they found her body. It was buried except for a foot stickingout. Or at least they believe it is her.
