Thanks again for the information. I honestly didn't mean to start any trouble. Should I bring any food with me (peanut butter, fruit, etc.) or are there plenty of places for me to eat in town?

Also, do you know the location of the youth hostel there?

The Youth Hostel is the 2nd last bus stop before the main Soraksan Park Entry. I stayed at a cheap hotel just outside the park for around 25k won. Not because it was cheap, but because I was 1km closer to the walking tracks than the Youth Hostel. (Meaning 2 km less walking each day).

I like the sound of that cheap hotel just outside the park entrance. Do you remember the name of it and how to get there from the bus depot?

I think it's local bus #7a, that departs around the corner, turn right, from the main Sokcho bus terminal. Get off the bus at the next stop past the Youth Hostel (on the left), just before the Hotel Seorak Park on the right. The yeogwons / cheap hotels are also on the right. Not 100% certain but think it was the Seorak Garden Motel I stayed at (30k won). There's a chicken hamburger place to eat at just 100 m up the road towards the NP entrance, & a couple of souvenir shops. The Hotel Seorak Park was a bit over my budget (150k won) but did have an atm in the foyer at right.

How many people could I expect there to be on a weekend in May for example? I'm reasonably athletic and lived/hiked between 1000 and 3000meters altitude for a year - how much time would I take enjoying the scenery but otherwise walking comparatively quickly? How long is the hike in length/altitude?
I you can do it without crampons or the like in May, I just brought my shoes.

Ulsanbawi would be a good day hike at Soraksan.

From wikipedia:

"Ulsanbawi is a rock formation in the Seoraksan national park. The shape of Ulsanbawi is unique in the area. To reach the rocks you need to follow a hiking path and climb over 800 steps. On the way there, there are two temples and a spherical rock (Heundeulbawi) which is located on top of a larger rock. This rock is about 5 metres (16 feet) high and can be moved with some effort. Thousands of people have already tried to push down Heundeulbawi, but nobody gets further than waggling the rock."
