My co-teacher has been rabbiting on about being able to buy phones for 1000W
I can't see how this is possible without tying myself into a contract of some sort.
One of my students then told me her new phone cost a 1000W and she pays only 10,000 a month
Just now I am using a friends card-phone which costs 10,000 a month mininum and then I just buy international calling cards to call Thailand on top of this.
I don't want a contract phone because it will cost me twice as much to run as a card phone.
So what is the deal with cell-phones. It's got me baffled.
Contract - 50k for the handset
30k for connection
14k a month line rental
xx a month phone calls
13k [per week phone card
PayG xx for handset
xx for number ( not sure how much)
10k per month recharge
13k per week phone card
So how do these 1000W phones factor into things? Are the a scam or legit? |

Pretty sure it's a promotion to get you to buy the phone and then pay by the month for it aside and over the monthly regular phone charges. As you know my phone is the schools property and it was already functioning when I arrived so I pay about 17,000 per mo phone bill, that's all. So, if you bought the 1000 deal you'd have to pay around 17,000 or so per month (depending on how much you use the phone for calling in Korea) and, on top of that you'd have to make payments on the phone (don't know how much but I assume it would depend on how long a pay off period you want). Just buy a decent used phone for 50 - 100$ and get the card service...it's much cheaper in the long run. Just pay 100,000 when you charge it and it should be good for 10 months unless you use more than 10,000 a month which you won't cause you only really use it for calling internationally w/ a int calling card and that doesn't effect the balance very much if at all...you won't have to bother going to the shop to have it recharged every month.

However, this might be a good deal if you can get it. Sounds like a lease deal and the company would probably expect to make their money back by you using the phone alot and them probably charging you a little extra......DARN, now I'm getting confused...  |

i got my boss and my co teachers to suss this out.
basically i'd end up doubling my monthly phone bill with connection fees, registration fees etc if i did it. |

| Actually, I don't remember there being a charge for the number. I went had them suss me a # and paid 10,000 for 30 days service. I can make 10,000 worth of calls in Korea in that time limit but I don't think I ever make more than 2000 worth...just use the int phone card to call LOS. |

Not all of the 1000won phones are rip offs. I already had a crappy motorola through SKT. I changed to LGT, bought a new phone for 1000 and paid a 30000won connection fee, now I pay roughly the same per month as I did with SKT. My phone is miles better than the POS motorola I had.
My deal was 번호이등. There were a limited selection of models without the catches of a long cotract or expensive monthly call plan. My phone has a decent 1.3MP cam, Free dmb tv etc. Not bad for 31000!
할부 is the one with the cost of the phone split over the contract period, usually the top end phones. |

There isn't one BUT.... you have to put a minimum of 30k won on the first prepayment for a new number AFTER you have bought the phone. |

But what is it costing a month?
What is your rental plan? Does it include and minutes?
I don't care about paying 30k intially as a credit top up or whatever it is. |

For three months I have to use the my condo plan which is 14800 and I must have a message pack 3300 for two months. Calls for this plan cost 20won per 10sec. I get 100 text messages and 5 'shotmail' msgs, basically mms in the message pack and some other stuff. After three months I can change to any plan I want. I think it's a 12 month contract period.
If you don't use your phone to call much or you won't be in Korea very long pay as you go is fine.
For pay as you go phones, you can buy any phone, new or second hand, and hook it on with the 30000 fee, but that 30000 is credit you can use. It's difficult to get a snazzy phone cheaply for pay as you go. Calls can cost 65won per 10 sec. I think text messages are about 30-50won each. |

Generally you can't get a super new phone without paying something. Either upfront for the phone, per month or having an expensive call plan. Some phones are available cheap if you have a history with a company, that's the 보조금 thing you see on ads. Some phone shops advertise "free phone" etc they know the deals and would be able to sort you out. Just stress you want something cheap, if you don't want to spend a lot. |
