So I was informed I would have no afternoon classes today as the firemen were coming. Sure enough, after lunch the fire alarm went off. The students were prepared, holding their shoes and in their stocking feet when the bell rang (so much for realism). Then all hell broke loose.

Suddenly every student was sprinting from their 2nd floor classrooms in one giant mass. Half the first graders stopped when they saw me to shout "hello," as per their usual practice, and got shoved and trampled by the second graders behind them.

At full speed on wooden floors and in socks, many of the students slid past the stairwell altogether. Another mass tumbled down half a flight of stairs (literally) leaving one boy with an obvious broken arm (A good thing we had firefighter paramedics on hand Rolling Eyes ).

Finally, those students who actually made it down the stairs all stopped inside the front door to put on their shoes, causing a massive bottleneck before anyone could get outside. It was perhaps the most idiotic scene I've seen in my journey in Korea. I just pray there is never a real fire at this school.

Haha, that is exactly how I picture it would happen at my school. Great story.

that is almost as scary as having the doors to a univesity student dorm chain-locked at night, from the outside no less. i came across this amazingly dangerous practice while working at a university of "education." When I asked a university student about the implications such an act had for escaping a fire or other disaster, the teacher-to-be just shrugged and smiled. oh, but what a smile.
