1. I

believe you overestimate the domestic threat AQ poses. They do pose a danger, but it's a security risk that shouldn't be exclusively focused on AQ. Domestic ecoterrorists have been a lot more active than AQ over the last 5 years. But somehow they don't warrant their own color code.

Becuase ecoterrorists don't aim to kill as many as possible.

AQ would if they could do much worse than 9-11.

2. Because of 1, you everestimate the response needed. The response you suggest will not completely eliminate the risk, may in fact increase the risk, and will compromise the moral compass of the US.

Perhaps on the other hand the US still has the moral high ground cause AQ is a hate group all for a sinister cause.

I would guess the US did lots of bad things in other wars, much of it is probably not documented . It didn't make the US wrong.

But more than anything - mideast regimes really do or w/o much difficulty could find out who supports and funds the terrorists. They also know who incites violence and who teaches hate if it is not the regimes themselves.

A major reason for terror is that mideast regimes and elites teach hate incite violence and fund terror.

Can the US just ignore this?

Quote:

3. You believe that 2 will eliminate 1. If protecting the US borders and domestic assets is impossible, how do you expect us to succeed in a worldwide manhunt? It's just not possible.

Would mideast regimes not know who is doing bad stuff in their own nations?

Syria knows what Syrians are doing, and the Royal family of Saudi Arabia knows what Saudis are doing. Libya knows what Libyans are doing . ect

Remember they have just about a 100% rate of success in quashing opposition to their own rule.

You're asking for a lot more things like this:
[quote]

Quote:
BEIJING - A Chinese court on Thursday sentenced a Canadian activist to life in prison for alleged terrorist links, delivering a ruling that could ratchet up political tensions between China and Canada.

Well China of course is a different case and AQ is not active in China.

Yes it encourages China to do such kind of stuff. I am not happy about it.
At the same time AQ and other groups get money everyday from the mideast. And mideast regimes and/or elites fire up the street with propaganda either to distract their populations from the short comings of the regimes or even as weapon. . In the case of Iran it is a deliberate military tactic against the US. Doing so keeps the region unstable , hostile to the US , and gets more people to join terror groups.

Quote:
Is that something you want more of?

of course not, at the same the China is China and the midesat is the mideast.

Ever heard of a pro democracy activist in Libya or Saddam's Iraq.

In the mideast the governments already imprison or kill them . For advocates of liberal democracy the most mideast nations already oppress them as much is possible. So there is likely to be little if any change.

While advocates of liberal democracy are oppressed those who teach hate incite violence and fund terror go free and are even encouraged to do so by the governments and the elites over there.

Just for the sake of argument, in what respect did the US win the Cold War? Did we bring freedom and democracy to the Soviet Union? Did we eliminate the threat of war? Did we eliminate Communism from the face of the Earth?

We bought about the dismantling of the Soviet Union and freed Eastern Europe. Several of those countries have freedom and democracy and a few are even E.U. members. As for Communism, yes. Russia is not Communist, and China is Communist in name only. Cuba is about the only true Communist nation and it's about ready to come down once the Castros die..which shouldn't take long.

You are not responding to the gist of my argument. Which is, was the Cold War "victory" an unmitigated victory? While the term Communism largely disappeared, the underlying totalitarian regimes remain largely in place in a number of countries. Is it still a victory just because they are no longer called "Communists?"

The other threat the Cold War presented, nuclear conflict, has not been eliminated either. According to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, the threat is even greater than it was before the fall of the USSR.

So just how substantial was our "victory"?
