So obviously you'd feel bitter if your husband divorced you and took half.
With that said, how do you feel about women who do the same thing to men?
Michael Jordan and his wife are currently going throug a divorce and she accouts to get $100 million plus dollars.

haha! Nice one! 8) Actually, this is similar to my sister's situation. Her lazy alcoholic unemployed partner would take her to the cleaners, and could possibly get custody of her child - even though that lazy arse has rarely lifted a finger to look after him, despite being unemployed most of the kid's life. She worked hard to earn her degree, works hard at her job, and then spends all her free time doing housework and taking care of the kid. She is only with him because she accidently fell pregnant, and does not love him enough to marry him. She only allowed him to stay with her for the sake of her child (felt guilty about removing him from his father) and doesn't need him in her life. In fact she'd be better off with out him, because he doesn't contribute (financially or otherwise) and only lives like a blood sucking parasite, getting boozed up whenever he gets half a chance. But if she kicks him out now, he'll make a nice profit out of it.

| Women still earn less |
And this is precisely why most of the time it's the women being awarded money from her husband and not vice versa. When (if) women ever achieve financial equality in the workforce, things will even out. |
SO then because of your sister's predicament I assume you are also against men giving childless women who contributed nothing to the marriage alimony, right? I know I am.
Also, women- unless the government forces corporations to do this- will never earn as much as men en masse- because it is just more expensive to hire women due to the fact that many 1) get pregnant and take paid maternity leave 2) quit after getting hitched or knocked up (usually 2-3 years in, right as they are getting good at their jobs) 3) need the company to set up childcare facilities so they may continue working 4) would rather work part time 5) are not as commited to their work because of their children (before you bite my head off, this is supposed ot be a good thing...Your babies should trump your work, every time)
The best way to get around this of course, would be for the employer/employee to sign a contract, but then again that would be deemed "sexist" and "unfair." I think it is also unfair for people to demand equal pay for unequal work and time spent. |

I know it is. That's why I'm mentioned the cooking, cleaning, and household chores...
I'm not saying that women or men necessarily deserve alimony but I think it's more than just a money grab.
If a man was married to a successful woman for a number of years and they divorced...I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of him receiving alimony. I think it's more a matter of context than a simple yes or no answer.... |

| Well the main reason for alimony is housewives that have taken care of kids for forty years and then get divorced. The only kind of job they could get would be WalMart or something. A certain amount of alimony makes sense to prevent people who've worked hard getting kicked that far down the socio-economic ladder. |

maybe that's its main reason- but not how it tends to be implemented. Prenups have become popular for a reason.
There is no reason, why a man, married five years to some woman (or the other way around) would have to give a substantial amount of his earnings or property to her AT ALL.
Are women so weak that they cannot take the necessary measures when they know they are heading towards divorce? Take a night class, get a job, learn a trade? We're not victims nor deserving of so much that others worked hard to get.
The life women led when they were married to an affluent husband is a luxury, not a right, and they should not expect that type of lifestyle to be carried out after the marriage is over. Alimony, except for about 10% of the time is totally ridiculous.
EDIT: I changed my mind now that I thought about it. If a man cheats on a woman, she gives up a lucrative career, beats her etc- this can all be compensated through a lump sum payment or a division of assets - no need for someone who is completely divorced from another person to put them on a personal dole. It's absolutely ridiculous. So i say alimony 0% of the time. It's ridiculous. Just ridiculous. Lump sum and division of assets, in VERY VERY special cases is more than enough.

No. I just don't think marriage is what it used to be-lifelong commitment. Its entered into lightly and without the correct attitude nowadays because the christian conviction behind it has evaporated.
Am I glad an unhappy person escapes a bad marriage? yes.
Am I glad that divorce has become commonplace? no. |

bullsh**.
I'm entering marriage with a lifelong commitment and am VERY serious about marriage and my relationship and I think Jesus is just about as real as the Tooth Fairy (as in NOT) and have 0% Christian Conviction, whatever that means. Please don't act as if Christians have the altruism and moral court monopoly- such smugness is unbecoming of a religion that has been so incredibly ignorant, judgmental, and violent. |

I don't know how she could divorce a guy who so brutally dominates Kevin Bacon. http://www.hanes.com/HanesCommerce/en-us/Explore.htm. In all fairness to Bacon, Jordan is goaltending in this commercial. I wonder why they didn't post any of those commercials of Jordan and Bacon playing grab-as* in their underwear. Those were hilarious. |

"accidently fell pregnant"
|
What's your point here? Are you suggesting my sister fell pregnant deliberately?
My sister tried to take the pill and had such a severe reaction to it, she's been told by her doctor never to take it again. The last time she took it, she had intense migraines and was down on her hands and knees, not able to stand up. It was a very frightening experience. So she has to used condoms. At the time she got pregnant, she was actually planning to leave the guy. He has since told my sister that he deliberately got her pregnant as a way to keep her. So yes, it probably wasn't an accident, but not because my sister was gold digging this arsehole. Quite the converse. She was the one who had a good job, he was a mature student. She is the one now paying the mortgage and keeping things together. Not only that, she has no free time as it is all spent caring for her kid and the house. He just about manages to cook for them sometimes.
You really make me sick. |

Yes, I'm amused. But on a more serious note, if you've ever lived with anyone, you know it usually takes a few weeks or so to extract yourself from the relationship. |

Yes, in principal. But it is usually more complicated than that as Alyallen has pointed out. If both spouses are childless and both had their own income, and one spouse was not sacrificing their own finances because of their role as spouse, then yes I agree with you. |

Well, if you have a huge disposable income and have no social conscience, life is usually a lot simpler. |
