I'll be upgrading (old p4->C2Duo) next week, but I don't want to reinstall windows. Are things going to go wacky when I plug my old HDD into a new motherboard (MB)? That is, is XP going to have a hard-time with all the new drivers? Will it just erase all the old MB drivers and accept the new MB just like that or are there going to be serious headaches?

As far as I know, you will have no choice but to reinstall XP. If you just try and plug your hdd into the new rig, it will be really messy.

Thanks for the great link Thunndarr. This info will certainly make the process less messy. I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work, meh...I've got all my documents and important stuff on a separate partition, so I just got to reinstall.

Anecdocal evidence, I know, but when I replaced a motherboard with another of exactly the same make and model (but with functional front USB ports), Windows did some crazy, crazy things. Reinstall is definitely required.

The olnly time it worked for me )well, that is) was when replacing the mainboard with the exact same make and model. My wife's board died, so I just put a new one in of the same type...no worries.

Otherwise, I have had too many hiccups and weird little annoyances to not format. However, I am freaky about my system...I know the pitches of all the system fans and have been known to wake up suddenly at night when I unwittingly enabled Q-fan and the fans powered down slightly. I am issued.
