There is no god.
What about you? |

| I believe Christianity has no more answers than Greek mythology, but the Greeks had cooler monsters. Neither of them gets anywhere in the ballpark of answering whether there is a god. |

Sorry, I tried to offer enough views that everyone would have something to choose... Could you explain what you consider to be an overlap? |

I'm pretty sure faith means to believe without proof. I have nothing against faith, just saying.
I picked that there is no god, but I also believe that Jesus was a real person.
edit..im from a very strong roman catholic family and community and I was taught in school that the old testament is allegorical. Indeed the bible(old testament) always seemed more of a protestant thing. My mom has ythe gospels but there is only a childrens copy of the old testament in our house. Is this an Irish phenomenom? |

Me too. I was gonna choose the latter, but voted NO GOD. The epistemological problem of an infinite regress of explanations rules out the existence of such an entity, but then that also goes for other attempts at 'why?'. The Big Bang theory has also become faith and not science in my opinion.
Jesus was definitely a real person, but he was no more divine than a gay pedophile. |

| Your options can be mixed and matched. For example, I believe in a higher power in the universe which I can't explain, but also, ...Jesus was a real (not divine) person who preached his philosophy of love and peace, and also in the teachings of ____________ (please explain), and also .the Christian Bible (Old and New Testament) is allegorical. |

A world where such eejits such as you exist could not have been created by a higher power.

| Some of the same people that make statements saying, "There is no god" complain when Christians say their absolutely is a God. What is the difference on a faith level? At least Agnostics acknowledge they don't know. "Wisest is he who knows he does not know." However facts aren't everything. We are emotional beings. That is why in my heart I believe Jesus was the son of God. Foolish as it may be to anyone who doesn't believe. I find it foolish when an atheist plants a firm statement and marks a Christian as a fool when they make the same firm statement in the opposite direction. I can understand Agnostics more. At least they know they don't know. |

I couldn't find any category to vote for but i found the thread sincere and interesting enough to elicit my two cents...
here's why i couldn't vote: i'd consider myself a christian, a committed christian, for lack of a better term. i think some of the bible is meant allegorically. some of it is intended to be taken literally. not all of it is true. i'd hold to the Nicean creed. and i intend no criticism of the poll, either, the options are well thought out. i am probably being too picky.

| The epistemological problem of an infinite regress of explanations |
it's not strictly epistemological, is it? wouldn't you call that metaphysics? so if i say, "explanations don't regress infinitely, and there's a god," i fear we can't really turn to epistemology one way or the other. the same goes for hawking and the big bang, and i'll be the first to admit that my limited intellect is not up to the challenge of following all of his theoretical physics. especially when he starts talking about time. yikes.
what would you say about the very idea that there has to be a beginning? or let me put it a different way - doesn't causality (which is itself metaphysical) compel us to suppose that there has to be some sort of beginning that solves the (metaphysical) problem of an infinite causal regress? what do you do with the question "why"?
this is not attempt at proselytization. i'm actually much more interested in how you decide what is and what isn't science than what you might think about theism. my apologies if you have already given detailed explanations on other threads in this board, i'm not usually around enough to keep up on the interesting threads.
and Spinoza, just what would your name sake say if he heard you talking this way! he's probably rolling in his grave. |

What about "I have no idea whether the Bible is literally true or allegorically true, but I believe that it's absolutely true"?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (New Living Translation): "16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work."
Psalm 19:7-10 (New Living Translation): "7 The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. 9 Reverence for the Lord is pure, rasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. 10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb."
The Bible teaches that the Word of God is true, useful, clear, perfect, and so on, but nowhere does it talk about it being literally or metaphorically being true. |
