|
|
Hello,
I'm back in Canada for a little bit and would like to take some friends and family out for a Korean meal since they have never had any. Seeing as we all live north of Toronto, I don't have time to go and research it myself and we don't have too much time to just walk around looking. We'd all be coming from different areas, so just having a particular place or intersection to meet in the city for a meal would be ideal.
I'm interested in kalbi pure and simple (cue mouth watering...). I'm not even sure where KoreaTown is in T-dot. Also, if you have any suggestions for places north of the city, like North York or Richmond Hill, it would make my day.
Appreciation and Thanks! |

Funny you should ask! I leave for Korea from Toronto in 2 days and I will miss this resturaunt the most: Buk Chang Dong Soon Tobu.
Located in the heart of Koreatown at Christie and Bloor in Toronto, BCDST is the best food ever, specializing in Soon Tobu. Get off the subway at Christie station on the Bloor line, walk to Bloor, and go East till you see the bright neon green sign and the line-up out the door!

I just realized that you mentioned Kalbi. While Soon tobu far surpasses kabli IMHO, there is an all-you-can-eat Korean resturaunt in Richmond Hill that has the BBQ in the table with an endless supply of good kalbi and other good meats.
The name of the place escapes me, but it is in the plaza right off the main drag that runs through the place, HWY 7 I think, and it shares the location with (suprise) a bunch of Chinese resturaunts, one named Jade something or other, with a bank on the corner. I realize that is vague, but its there!
I would also recommend just parking your car on Christe across from Christie Pitts and just walking through Koreatown on Bloor. There are simply tons of resturaunts to choose from, and a great kalbi place is at the Korea Gardens or something, its a huge place on the north side of the street with stones on the front of the resturaunt. They serve kalbi a bunch of different ways, and its DAMN good too. Plus, that way you get to have the Koreatown atmosphere Richmond Hill certainly lacks! |

There's a great Dalkalbi (chili chicken) restaurant on the south side of Bloor street about 3 blocks west of Bathurst. It's below ground, but has a street level enterance. Sorry, I don't remember the name, but it's easy to find.
Ifyou want some delicious grilled pork, chicken and salmon, head over to the Korean Grill on Queen Street West, 1 block east of Much Music. Last time I was there it was only $11.99 for all you can eat. It tasted very good too. |

My standards for Korean food are very high.
Most of the Korean restaurants in Toronto are crap. If I were in Korea, they wouldn't get a second visit. But I'm shocked to see how packed they are. I've considered opening my own Korean restaurant here, as I'm sure it would be successful.
Personally I've never had a real kalbi meal here, nothing better than passable.
Granted I've heard word of a good place in the 2nd Koreatown, near Yonge and Finch. I haven't been there myself but I'll see if I can get the name.
There are a few exceptions. Buk Chang Dong Soon Tubu is great. Um Ji Bun Shik is also good.
Joon's Tak Kalbi, mentioned above, is better than nothing.
Stay away from the Korean Grill House at all costs, no matter how cheap it is, and no matter how good it smells. Your friends who have never had Korean food might think it is cool, but you'll hate yourself in the morning. |

I can think of 2 uptown.
1. on Steeles West of Yonge. In a plaza near a Swiss Chalet. Quite nice. It's before the Toys R Us. Opposite Canadian Tire.
2. Yonge North of Steeles. On the west side. Sorry, can't remember the name. But it's a big place. Sitting in a sliver/grayish plaza. Opposite of Red Lobster (not exactly, but close)
These are the 2 I take my family to for Kalbi when I'm back home. |

They must have improved it since I was there. My wife and I went the first weekend it opened (flower displays and all) and were somewhat disappointed. But that was a few years ago so it might have improved since then. Grand openings can be a hit or miss affair.

That's the truth--a lot of cheap hole-in-the-wall type places are here, but most aren't very good. Few side dishes and they aren't very fresh, or the main dishes just don't taste quite right compared to Korea. And that lack of quality goes double for the Korean-owned sushi joints. I can't recall anyplace offhand that I would really want to return to, though I expect there are good places out there somewhere.
Haven't been to a kalbi place since we've been back (much prefer going to the Korean supermarket and eating it at home as the wife isn't a big meat eater); however, I might check out a couple of these other places that have been mentioned in this thread. |

Newbie, do either of these by chance use real charcoal at the table?
I suspect the practice may be illegal in Canada.
Cthulhu, I hear you about the sushi. I'm shocked at how popular the "sushi row" on Bloor is.
I heard from a good source that the sushi place in Koreatown, next to Clinton's, is good, and cheap(er). I haven't been yet, but it's on the list.
But Japango is great, as is Ichi Riki. Neither are cheap.
But definitely go to Buk Chang Dong Soon Tubu. |

Thanks guys. I was in Toronto today on unrelated-to-eating-Korean-food errands. I did stop by KoreaTown there along Bloor. I saw Buk Chang Dong Soon Tobu. Unfortunately, I wasn't hungry at the time and was on a schedule so I didn't have a chance to eat anything anywhere.
Anyway, thanks for the tips. Thanks Newbie for the uptown ones especially and I'd also like to hear if they use charcoal. I need to get everyone together and figure out what's best. |

Also, both are quite expensive. |

A few weeks ago, I went to this decent place at the corner of Yonge and Bloor with some folks. We enjoyed all-you-can-eat. Pork, beef, chicken, beef ribs, ox tongue, ox liver, salmon, squid, lamb, shrimp and fish fillet on the grill.

| I simply refuse to visit this "Korean" restaurant unless you can guarantee me that 1 - People will stare, and 2 - mothers will be letting their babies take a whiz at the table in soju bottles. |

| If you want a packed dining experiance, beside Clintons is a nice place. It's on the S.E. corner. This place is cheap and the food, altough limited, is good. |
