I am just wondering what books you are using right now? Curently we have a mix of English Time and See Saw (with other various writing books) for elementary and Middle School. I am looking for alternatives.
Is there something better out there?
What is your favorite?

I would think that by middle school English Time would be too easy, at least i hope so. i'm teaching 2nd and 3rd grade students (at my hogwan)from ET4 and they are keeping up fine.

I also like the Let's Go, Exploring English, and Up and Away in English series (the latter only hand-in-hand with the teacher's guides, which are excellent.)

I like Exploring English as well, but if your class already has a good basic grasp of English, you can probably skip the first book and go straight to the second.

You guys have books? I have access to Lets Go - but it's a discretionary class- no textbook. The Korean teachers won't tell me what lesosn plan's they're using right now and I still have no idea of waht I'm suppposed to bne teaching the students or what level they speak at.

Then again. I've heard that's normal. Smile

For textbooks far and away my favorite is the True Stories in the News series. It has stories that are actually somewhat interesting (especially good for low level middle school students, not so much for the kiddies) and then questions and activities based on that.

Right now I'm teaching only novels. Yay Smile

I have uploaded several books to:

http://www.esnips.com/web/jtcefl

I assume since we are in education, copyright laws can be bent!?

edit: It looks like the other address won't work anymore!

Jizzo,

thanks for catching the sharing bug. Good to see and some handy titles there. I'm going to put your link on my own adobe / book page, if you don't mind.

DD

PS. I like your signature, it is so true. Best thing that ever happened to me in teaching was reading as a first year teacher, "The Art of teaching". Forget who wrote it but it set me off...

Sadly, no evidence of critical thinking skills to be found here. Rolling Eyes As they say, ignorance is bliss.

Seon-bee

I was being facetious. Shocked

Sadly, no evdience of social skills to be found here. Rolling Eyes As they say, taking oneself too seriously can lead to idiocy.

Besides, my statement is common belief in Asia.

Back to the OP-

I managed to get my hands on an Oxford English/Korean Picture dictionary. I'm sure this will come in handy when introducing new vocabulary. I'm also pretty sure it can be found pretty cheap (less than $20 US).

I just discoverd this series of books. The first two stories I used were a BIG hit with my students.

I only have a hard copy of the books. It would be great if I could find them scanned or in an otherwise electronic form.

Jizzo,

I've used that picture dictionary in many many different ways and I would put that at the top of the list, of books a teacher should have here in Korea. So useable in many ways. I often used to photocopy a page, strike out each second label. Give to pairs and they explain the missing photo/vocab item and write in the appropriate one. Also great for discussions around certain themes. So i would say all teachers should have a copy handy -- award winning book.

DD

PS. Yes, for educational purposes copyright laws are lenient. This includes just copying/downloading part of a document for use (10 pages). I for one, as an educator, try to push the bubble on this issue. For the sake of students.

I'm using the "Reason To Write" series of books for my middle/high school students. It's a terrific series that I actually wouldn't mind using on my kids back home in Canada, though it's written for an ESL audience.

I'm using the WorldLink series of books, and find (for non-beginners) they can't be beat... it's a 4-skills book, enough exercises per chapter you can pick and choose what to ignore, it has online resourses for both teachers AND students, a video series that is separate from but parallel to the books, and they have exam-making software that enables you to whip up an exam within 30 seconds.
