| Well after taking a look at dpreview and a couple of other sites I made a decision. Yesterday we ordered the Digital IXUS 850 IS (also known as Canon PowerShot SD800 IS). It should arrive in a couple of days. |

| it arrived about 1 hour ago. Seems pretty good right now. The 1gb card we got with it is not high speed, but will do until I get to Yongsan. does anyone know the max size memory card this takes? the manual is 100+ pages in Korean. I could find it, but am not inclined to spend the time. |

Good choice. In my opinion, the Canon IXUS line is by far the best you can get for the price. |

You can easily find the English PDF format of the book online. I did for mine. |

So I've been taking pictures all day and am generally satisfied - though I think they should be a little crisper especially at superfine and largest file size. Can't post any as they are pics of my wife and kids.
However I did just step outside to test the night shooting. The first pic is in full auto mode with flash on. The second pic is manual mode ISO 1600 no flash. I'm pretty happy with that one - it's grainy but it should be at iso 1600. I did no photoshop except to resize the pictures to post on the net. Picture is 14 floors up looking at the above ground parking.
pic one - auto mode flash on
pic two - manual mode no flash iso1600

i'll never understand why people would drop 300-400$ on a point and shoot camera. no matter what the megapixel count or the in-camera optical zoom (NEVER use digital zoom), your photo is gonna look only slightly better than a disposable camera. in fact, that's what P&S cameras are: the disposable camera of yesteryear.
i mean, c'mon, look at the noise in the last photo posted by superhero. you spent 400$ for that?
spend the extra money people, maybe 100-200$ more, and buy yourselves a low-range DSLR. or if you wanna start doing really fun things with your camera, a mid-range will do you well.
just my 2 cents. thanks for you time. |

Uh oh, Superhero might have to return his new camera!
I'm pretty sure the IXUS can take at least a 4GB card, if it can take the high powered SD cards, then you're looking at 8GB. I'm thinking of buying one for myself. |

Less than $400.
And read the post I had the ISO set to 1600 - of course its grainy.

D-SLR cameras don't fit in your breast pocket, require changing of lens and knowledge of how to take a good picture. My wife is not interested in that, my daughter is 5 and just wants to point and shoot.
I'll get a D-SLR when I have more time for photography. For right now this works and you may want to step back and think that not everyone is in exactly the same situation as you before letting off on a rant suggesting that someone has wasted their money. |

really?
it was taken after dark, without flash, iso 1600, 14 floors up. I'd say it's pretty damn good and that you don't know jack about photography. |

I disagree. For equipment and conditions that is a decent night shot. |

sorry superhero, didn't mean to get on your back about your new purchase. i guess my point was simply most P&S cameras are relatively the same (depending on price range), so there's no real point in shopping around for one.
and you're right: any pic taken with such a high ISO setting's gonna be noisy. |
