I'm a Sabres fan, from the New York side of Niagara Falls. The Sabres are most notable for three things:
1. losing the Stanley Cup on a goal that shouldn't have counted (the rule that would've disallowed it was stupid, but had been enforced consistently the entire season)
2. possibly being the only team in NHL history to have a goal counted against them when the puck went through the side of the net (in a playoff game no less, was against Philly, can't remember which year)
3. also possibly the only team whose goalie had his throat cut by a skate (Clint Malarchuck, in the late 80s-early 90s).
So it hasn't always been great to be a Sabres fan. But this year they're an elite team, very good chance to win the Cup, so I'm wondering in what unique way they can possibly add to the pain of being a Buffalo sports fan. Losing on a short-handed goal is a distinct possibility (they've been vulnerable to that all year) or losing to their old goalie in the Cup (Haskey plays for Detroit now). But these ways of losing don't require much imagination. If any team is gonna lose because the puck hits a nick in the ice or the net gets knocked out of place at the last second or their goalie has a heart attack in the middle of a breakaway, it's Buffalo.
It's not just hockey, either. The Bills lost four Super Bowls in a row, once on a last-second missed field goal. In the 2nd one, their MVP running back couldn't find his helmet and had to miss the start of the game (maybe he was drunk- it came out later that he was an alcoholic). The last playoff game they were in they lost on this play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qwh1pfri8F8 (hmm.. is the white tight end whose 40 yard dash you could time with a sundial gonna keep the ball or try to lateral it? better play it safe and send everyone to his side of the field- the kicker will cover the other side). Finally, possibly their greatest player of all time is now more well known for getting away with murder, then going on to a career terrifying strangers to make enough cash to keep paying off his legal debts and play golf a few times a week (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12754888).
Ok this got kind of pointless, sorry. But, as a sports fan, is there anything more painful than rooting for Buffalo teams? |

No nothing wrong with it. I lost interest in the Yankees partly because they won so much. Something about suffering holds your interest in a team.
I disagree about Losman though. Look at his numbers from last year http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6781. In the last nine games the Bills went 5-4 and he had three games with a 100+ rating, threw 13 TDs and 8 picks. Did this playing behind a very shaky line, with only one legit starting receiver and a running back who was out for two games and only had 20+ carries in two out of those last nine games. In fact, if you compare him to the other expected-to-be franchise QBs that came in the same year (Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers) he either compared favorably with or outplayed all three in the 2nd half of the season.
I don't know what to think of their offseason. It's good they picked up some help for the line and I don't think they had much choice but to lose Fletcher, Clements and Spikes, but how do you replace those guys? Same thing with McGahee. Be interesting to see what happens in the draft. Man I miss talking about the NFL. |

My dad lived in Buffalo during the french connection days so I was raised on Sabres hockey and I haven't been able to watch since we got cheated, not defeated. I am trying to get into the team this year but I am afraid of getting disappointed again |

If they lose, then it's Soul-Lifting, not Crushing.
Kinda like when the Bills choke across America. |

I really hope Buffalo wins. My uncle played for them back in the 70's, so we my family has always hoped better for the Sabres. They are however not the favourite team of anybody in my family, where we all cheer for different teams. Me - Montreal, Dad - Boston, Mom - Pittsburgh. |

I had a relavtive play for them around the same time, too, but no one in my family cared much either way. If we went to watch a Sabres game (we were just across the border from Buffalo), it would be to cheer their opponents, watch the Sabres lose, then go get some Anchor Bar wings.
Me- Montreal (later Quebec when they expanded into the NHL), Dad- Chicago, Brother- Pittsburgh |

You may have heard of the Chicago Cubs - working on a century of futility.
Thank goodness I'm a Dodgers fan.
(Also from upstate (Brockport), so I have some affection for the Sabres; just don't care that much about hockey.) |

As a team, it's hard to match the Cubs for suffering. But if you're from Chicago, you had the Bulls in the 90s. If you're comparing cities, Chicago's got nothing on Buffalo for suffering because of sports teams. |

How related, name and when?
My uncle played from the very first Sabres game in 1970 until 1977. Name, Roger Crozier. |
