Yep, it's yet another woman-getting-hit story.

So, about 5 minutes ago I needed some toilet paper and I'm walking out of my apartment and just as I come out the door I hear a *smack*! I rush out and I see right beside the front door of my apartment building this woman go reeling and this angry looking adjosshi grabbing at her. So I get between them and say in korean, "what's going on here?" and he tells me 가! 가! (go! go!) and I say, "calm down! don't hit women!" and he tells me something to the effect of "I don't usually do this. I'm sorry but just get out of here."

So I look at him and I look at her.

She's hugging the wall of the building and sobbing and looking very pathetic.

I look at him, and he's kinda rugged for an adjosshi, but still only 5'8". I can take this guy. Or at least I'd be embarrassed if I couldn't

I look back at her. There's something theatrical about the way she's sobbing. She should be running away. But she's not going anywhere.

So I turn to him and say, "I'll be back" because I couldn't think of anything else to say or do. I go buy my TP, thinking about what to do when I walk back by there. Take the guy on? But for what? They probably fight like this every weekend. Once the smacking is happening in public, it's almost certainly not the first time. Probably some sick co-dependent relationship. They probably both got smacked as kids and now they've grown up and found each other and they're smacking away. They'll probably get married and have some kids and smack them around too.

I leave the store and walk towards home. I come around the corner, and what do I see?

He's leaning against the wall with his hands at his sides, and she's hugging him as tight as she can. He looks off to the side nonchalantly. She seems to be beseeching him for his sweet, sweet adjosshi love. It's almost like she just did something bad to him.

Some people you just can't help.

Hahahaha. Ahhh... battered women are like that the world over. It's not Korea-specific (though some of them are pretty brazen about taking it outdoors).

This happens everywhere.

While not condoning violence, I would still be circumspect, as I don't know the story behind the couple. It is presumptious (and idiotic) to try to fit every event into a one-dimensional political worldview.

Second: What makes you think you can help others? Take care of yourself first. Turn your attention INWARD and keep it there until you begin to understand the meaning of humility.

I gotta ask, what kind of pimp has a "classic game of the week"? Are you sitting there like "B*tch, get my money! And don't interrupt me when I'm playing Bad Dudes!"

The main thing is to not report it to the police.

A Korean man was assaulting a black man. When a white lady saw it, she reported it to the police. The black man and white lady both went to jail. Apparently, it's a crime to report crimes.

When I once reported an assault to the Cheonho Red Light District Police Department, they put me in the back of their Red Light District Pimpmobile and drove me to the Gangdong prison, where we just sat there for ten minutes. They had two chances to arrest, or at the very least question, the Korean assailant but didn't do anything.

Whatever you do, don't report crimes to the police unless you want to be harrassed and possibly put in prison.

Yeah, haha. I tried to say it with the implication that he'd be in trouble if he was still smacking her around when i got back. But I said it in Korean as "돌아올께요" which doesn't sound very bad*ss.

Bingo! Battered Person Syndrome:

Quote:
...any person who, because of constant and severe domestic violence usually involving physical abuse by a partner, becomes depressed and unable to take any independent action that would allow him or her to escape the abuse. The condition explains why abused people often do not seek assistance from others, fight their abuser, or leave the abusive situation. Sufferers have low self-esteem, and often believe that the abuse is their fault. Such persons usually refuse to press criminal charges against their abuser, and refuse all offers of help, often becoming aggressive or abusive to others who attempt to offer assistance.

In Canada I saw a domestic despute go public a grand total of once in my 28 years of living there. A rather small woman was violently trying to attack a huge guy and if they both went at it she could have been seriously hurt. So I called the cops. They arrived after things had died down. They arrested the guy and it ended with the woman being dragged off the police car as she begged them not to take him away. The guy had thrown her four feet back against a wall rather roughly one of the times she had lunged at him but otherwise she had instigated all the violence.

Somewhere between that and Korea there must be a happy medium.

My sister has an interesting story about getting involved in some sort of dispute like that in Canada.

She was driving with her friend down one of the main arteries in the university area (109th Street and about 80th Ave for those of you who know Edmonton) when a girl ran out onto the road. The girl had clearly been assaulted, so my sister stopped so they could let the girl in. The girl was Native and said she'd been attacked.

Before they got away, the guy charged out and jumped into the minivan. My sister's friend kicked him a few times, and my sister grabbed the keys and got out. The guy said "Bye" (in kind of a Snake from the Simpsons way) and jumped into the front seat, planning to drive away. Of course he couldn't without the keys.

My sister flagged down an ambulance and the paramedics secured the guy. The victim ended up not pressing charges, but she told my sister's friend "I never saw a white girl kick so much ass."
