In any sort of physical altercation the person recieving the most damage is due money from the person winning the fight regardless of who started it.
don't get in a fight and if you do, don't win. If you win the fight, run like hell or else you'll end up paying millions of won damages even if the other person started it. |

It works pretty much the same way for motor vehicle accidents, too.
The thinking seems to go something like this: no one is completely innocent or guilty. The accident/fight could not have happened if both parties weren't 'there' at that moment, so they both share the blame.
It's somehow connected to maintaining group harmony. |

There is an exception to this rule. A friend and I were jumped by three Korean men in Daegu, and I ended up chipping a bone in my knuckle on one of their faces (I dont recommend this). Turns out, I wasnt charged or forced to pay money, not cuz we were jumped or we won the fight (Im 1-0 in Korea), but because my cracked knuckle trumped his swollen, cut face. But, of course, since Im a waygook and he is a Korean, he and his friends weren't charged or forced to pay money. But he is just a tad uglier now than when he first met me. |

I got smacked off my motorcycle last autumn, shattering my right leg. The farmer that hit me tried to ride away (he was on a tractor). Luckily, he didn't get far and we had all the relevant documents and evidence handy.
After he hid for a few weeks, the police finalized a verdict of sorts, saying I was 100% the victim. The next day, he told the farmer, and a few days later, the farmer was at my bedside, begging forgiveness and promising he meant no harm.
He ended up paying my hospital bills, promising to pay for my third leg operation next winter, and an undisclosed sum, as "blood money." Essentially, it's an out-of-court settlement that he paid to keep out of prison for felony hit-and-run. He was still subject to minor citations for putting his tractor on the road and causing an accident.
As for fighting, learn to wrestle and you can stretch people instead of injure them. It's more humiliating and leaves no marks. |

I definitely recommend the wrestling option. A couple of bitch slaps are also good...no blood. Humiliation is much more effective than a beating. |
